  1. Disabling or manually managing a service

Context: I have multiple services running that blocks me from installing Docker which is crucial for work.

The Services GUI manager has the startup type disabled for these apps.

I cannot, as an admin, in safe-mode, using regedit, also running as admin, change the service "Start" key under SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\<servicename>. Regedit fails to write. Other services are editable.
Having tried the normal GUI approach I don't know what to do to get any deeper access.

    :)

    Windows 7 services

You should just know which services to set to manual, there are a ton of them, starting with xp. The time service is the first one... unless you set it up properly, just disable it. Then remote registry, I don't need anyone else messing with my registry... disable, I don't use themes, disable, there are a few others too, then things like adobe update service, not needed, disable... it's not that hard to figure out what you can disable, or at least put to manual.
Edit: if you need suggestions, get The Ultimate Troubleshooter, not free, but it will show you how to do much of this.

  3. Unable to Connect to Logical Disk Manager Service Error in Computer Management

WELL, I'll be an "S.O.B."! I got it... lol, just now!

Apparently, & I am going to record this & BOOKMARK/FAV it in my webbrowsers as "HOW TO FIX LOGICAL DISK MANAGER HASSLES" (lol), it is SOMETHING in my services!

You need THIS list of them running (provided you have them online that is, some OS won't have SOME of these (this is Windows Server 2003) & some are 3rd party & won't matter):

Disabling or manually managing a service SERVICESNEEDEDFORLOGICALDISKMGT2SERVICES.jpg

    * NO SAFE MODE REQUIRED - THIS FIXED IT, PURELY SERVICES RELATED... oddly, no "dependencies" other than the ones the services need (RPC & Plug n Play) are listed in the 2 services for Logical Disk Management... it's like MS missed (somehow) the fact that there IS other dependencies on other services than what they list!

That list above is PROBABLY "overkill" & it is only a fraction of that list above, but the point is there... with ALL of those active? Logical Disk Manager "gets its act together" again & works!

    APK

P.S.=> BRB, with screenshot of services & their startup status needed for this to work, in case anyone else hits this... it is a real you-know-what if you can't get to a disk to format it, lol... so, recording it for everyone's sake! apk

Disabling or manually managing a service

Windows 10 - Disk Management stalls with message "Connecting to virtual disk service"

Disk Management never loads and stalls at "Connecting to virtual disk service."

This may be an issue if you are running SSD and have a SSD manager that suggests turning off a number of services to improve SSD longevity. Or if you have disabled services using a tweak site like Home | Black Viper | www.blackviper.com. Not sure which was the case
for my computer but I'm pretty sure it was one of those two. =)

I've seen two solutions outside of the Microsoft Answers so I'm going to post both of them in a single post. One worked for me but others have had the other issue of the two.

    Possible Solution 1

Virtual Disk is disabled. To enable:

    • Type services.msc in search or run box and press enter
    • Scroll down to Virtual Disk Service. Is it disabled?
    • Right click > Properties > Startup type > Manual or Automatic
    • You can also press the start button to start the service.
    • Check Disk Management to see if your drives show up.
Possible Solution 2 (this worked for me)

Volume Shadow Copy is disabled. To enable:

    • Type services.msc in search or run box and press enter
    • Scroll down to Volume Shadow Copy Service. Is it disabled?
    • Right click > Properties > Startup type > Manual or Automatic
    • You can also press the start button to start the service. (I set it to manual and then pressed the start button)
    • Check Disk Management to see if your drives show up. (Disk Management showed the drives instantly)

    Hope this helps someone.
