Windows 10: Local file sharing via Ethernet network with Windows 10

I have a PC with upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 ver 1909 Build 18363.592. I also have a laptop with a new install Windows 10 Home ver 1903 build 18362.592.


They are the only workstations on a home network connected via Ethernet. They both use Norton Internet Security latest version, and currently updated.


I cannot share folders or files between these devices. On both, when selecting a folder in File Explorer and the Share tab, the Share button is unavailable.


I have spent very many hours trawling the internet, including your Support pages and Community Boards, without discovering a successful solution. Some suggested “solutions” have been very complex – far too complex for a fundamental requirement like local file sharing.


I am aware of the OneNote option and logging into a Microsoft account but I am not interested in either option.


Please advise:

• 1. Is the lack of file sharing capability by design, and should I give up on trying to fix it;
• 2. If not intended are you aware of the problem and can you direct me to the definitive, simple solution;
• 3. Are you aware of the problem and will you be providing an update to fix it?

Windows 7 File Sharing between computers, PROBLEMS!!

Don't worry about homegroup. It's just an additional layer (of 'convienience') above 'old' classic Windows Shares mechanism.
If your transfers are terrible with this setup, they will most probably be as terrible with any other approach.

At first, focus on wired ethernet. Copying a file between HTPC and PC will show you transfer rate. Also... If you go to "task manager", you'll see network speed (network tab).
Focus on wired ethernet for now... what speeds are you getting ?

Ethernet Light Orange/ "Local Area Network" Not in Network List

Last night I noticed my ethernet light on the back of my computer was orange. I did some research to find the reason. Some websites said it was an increased connection speed. Others said a problem with the connection.
The local area network is no longer in the list of network connections and the other computer in my house has a green light on the ethernet port.
I've used all the cmd.exe ipconfig steps suggested by websites. Flush dns, reset dns, etc. I've also used the network troubleshooter in windows10 which told me a problem was not found.
Nothing seems to change the light back to green. Can someone help me find the problem so I can fix it?

• Have you made any changes on your PC?
• Did you perform any Windows update recently?
• Are you connected to Domain network?
