Remote Windows FTP via Filezilla and SSL (FROM Linux TO windows)

    Hi folks

Anybody got any comments about Filezilla as a client on a Linux GUI to retrieve files from a remote Windows system via SSL. It works perfectly from LINUX to LINUX (you need to ensure openssl and service sshd is running) but it seems a little bit of a pain to get an SSL server working in windows (or at least to me).

I really don't like the idea of SAMBA transfer over the public internet or using rdp (on linux rdp'ing to windows is easy enough - krdp, xrdp, etc etc). In any case on remote connections rdp is as slow as molasses even with decent Internet speeds at both ends - upload on the remote and download at the local end.

Filezilla seems reasonably secure with ssl

here's an example between two local linux machines

I haven't yet got windows connection to work yet -- not a windows expert so advice from anyone here would be welcome. I think I'm getting hosed up in the public key thing on Windows with SSL.

Note I want transfer From REMOTE WINDOWS TO LINUX (while logged on to LINUX) (not the other way around which is easy enough !!)

(Windows 10 PRO / Workstation -- not using Windows 10 HOME)

    Cheers
    jimbo

Windows 10 Defender blocking FTP connections to FileZilla Server

Hi, I am running Wnidows 10 with a FileZilla Server. I cannot connect to the server when inbound rules are set to default (no rule, no access). If I set inbound rules to "allow", i can connect to the FileZilla Server.

    Inbound rules
Name Profile Enabled Action Override Program
FileZilla Server Interface.exe All Yes Allow No FileZilla Server Interface.exe
FTP Server (FTP Traffic-in) Private,Public Yes Allow No svchost.exe
FTP Server Passive (Traffic-in) Private,Public Yes Allow No svchost.exe
FTP Server Secure (SSL Traffic-in) Private,Public Yes Allow No svchost.exe

    What could I be missing?

    Thanks
    Mike

    Setting up Filezilla FTP

Verify his avg isn't blocking it, he doesn't need to configure anything in his router if he's just connecting to you and downloading.

FTPS is actually very simple with filezilla, not at home to walk you through it. But if you got this far I'm sure just playing with it you'll figure it out. Hardest part is setting up the generic certificate with filezilla, which is even very easy.

The 425 can't open data connection is the error I get with my current ISP if I try to run a ftp server through the normal ports (20/21). I tried other ports, I can always connect but can never send a list. So I setup filezilla for ftps and it works great as usual.

How do I connect to FTP over TLS with explicit SSL using Windows 10 File Explorer?

My son recently set up what he calls an "internet worthy" FTP server - he said: "By default, FTP does not encrypt usernames, passwords, or data, but by using 'FTPES' you can force all of that to be encrypted". He used a linux-based server to set it up -
and it works wonderfully for him and all of the other linux-based devices around the house (like android phones and his computer). I can use the server too, it's just that I need to use a sideloaded app called "FileZilla FTP Client". The problem that I ran
into is that I wanted to connect to our FTP server using Windows 10's built-in file explorer by adding a network location instead of having to launch filezilla every time I want to access my data.

I asked my son about making it compatible with the file explorer app, but he says that he cannot find a way to make the file explorer app "use TLS with explicit SSL". He also states that he is no expert on windows, but he knows that making the server "normal"
FTP would pose a security vulnerability when accessing it from the internet for the aforementioned reasons.

So, how do I connect to FTP over TLS with explicit SSL using Windows 10 File Explorer or is it not possible to do so?
