  1. Save As dialog locking up when accessing locally networked server

So I have an Unraid server on my network for all my file storage needs. I clean installed Windows shortly after 1909 launched, but since then whenever I try to save a file, be it from Firefox or Photoshop, if I try to route to my server using \\server\, it will lock up the dialog box for about 2 minutes.

I have the network drive mapped and can access it quickly using that, but why is routing directly to it locking up the system? It's faster to just type \\server\ in to the dialog than clicking through to find the mapped network drive, even with it being in Quick Access.

Is there a fix? Network discovery and fire sharing and all that are on. Also, it worked fine before reinstalling the OS. If I open Explorer and click Network, and open Server it works fine. The problem only seems to exist in Save As dialog boxes.

Remote access to my (local) server's folders

But what if he tries to access this mapped drive when he is not on the same subnet of his server ?

  3. Remote access to my (local) server's folders

I am running a simple local fileserver. Windows based.

I would like to access (load, save, modify) what's on this server when I am away on business trips. Laptop -- internet -- router - server

What is the best way to do this? Setup WebDAV or ftp-server or something else? I would prefer direct access, ie. being able to load/save from an application rather than using ftp as a separate step.

Save As dialog locking up when accessing locally networked server

Remote access to my (local) server's folders

    • Set up an FTP server on your file server.
    • Map the FTP server as a network location on your laptop under "Computer".
This will allow programs to open and save files directly to the FTP server just like it was a drive in your computer.
