Windows 10: Win10, Icon in task bar black square

I have a shortcut on my desktop that opens a specific web page. I have created an icon for it, and the icon shows on the desktop. To get quicker access to it, I have pinned the shortcut to the task bar. That worked fine for a while. Then suddenly the icon turned to a black square in the task bar, still showing the correct icon on the desktop. I followed some advice that told me to stop explorer, delete the icon database, and start explorer again. That, in fact, did restore the icon on the task bar, but after a reboot of the computer it was back to a black square.


All other icons show up fine on the task bar.


Does anybody have any ideas about this?

[SOLVED] Mail & Store show as white square icons in task bar

Yes tried a disk cleanup today, rebooted and still the same. Interestingly now the icons in the start menu for mail and store are no longer white squares, they are blank document type icons. They still show as white squares in the task bar when running
though.

If the icon is hidden from the task bar, you can enable it by using the following steps. The icon might be hidden. Here's how to show the battery icon:

• Right-click an empty area on the taskbar, and then click
  Properties.
• Under Notification area, click
  Customize.
• In Notification Area Icons, click on Select
  which icons appear on Taskbar.
• On in the drop-down list next to
  Power, and then click OK.

If the issue still persists you can try Updating the latest Power management driver software for Windows 10 from the manufacturer website.

Unable to pin Edge icon to task bar after latest Windows Explorer upgrade

Have done a reset. The edge icon is now on the task bar but it just shows as a black square. Thoughts?
