Ownership locked after upgrading to W10

Got a new computer with Windows 10, reconnected my external HDD with all my files. Most files audio and video on the external HDD are mysteriously blocked, not related to file extensions some files with same extension work, others don't.

Tried to log in as Administrator and go to my HDD, properties, security, advanced, Change Owner and assign it to my User name.

Explorer went through all files and folders in my HDD and "assigned ownership" to my User name. But the files are still locked.

I also tried right-clicking on a file and give owenship to my User name. Didn't work either.

I edited the regedit to add a "Take ownership" function to the right-click menu so I could manually asign ownership. Didn't work either.

What can be done to regain access to my files ?

I was thinking of copying the files to my internal HDD, reformat my external HDD and put them back on the external HDD.

    :)

Locked out after upgrade to W10 from W7

I am following the steps outlined. When on the cmd screen, when I write the net user comd, I get three accounts, Administrator, DefaultAccount(as spelled) and Guest. None of these are the account MATER that is the one I have on that computer. It is also giving me the following message: "The command completed with one or more errors" Where to now? Tks!

    w10 locked up screen

After trying to solve the boot problem 3 weeks after the screw up within 4-5 days of upgrade

trying various help from yahooing/googling in futile

the locked screen with no other users available on the stand alone pc

with no backup of the last W7, except what might be in windows.old file,

with the last operation on this being to upgrade for the w10

no restore points or system image of w10

only way of getting into safe mode through w10 setup pen drive

I am out of any useful fresh method left to try. I have also posted under a different title where there had been unsuccessful suggestion. If you found a new way to get into default administrator account?
