  1. NAS access for remote users

    Good morning all,

We are a small design and engineering firm that is beginning to allow more and more remote workers. With that comes the issues of data backup, file sharing, and user based access permissions. In researching options, I believe our needs would be easily suited for a NAS device with remote access abilities, not necessarily a true server. Currently all in house users are mapped to a shared folder on a primary Windows 10 pc.( build 17763.1039) Only when the primary pc is on can the files be accessed. I want to offload this, add some backup ability and also allow access for remote users.

What we need is the following:
    8 TB storage (4TB x 2) with RAID
    Ethernet connectivity
Max 10 users (allowing for growth)
Ability to map the drive location via windows 10, both on the LAN and for remote users. We have to be able to map drive, not a web browser based sharing option. This is due to how AutoCAD works when sharing certain files.
Ability to assign user (and / or group) based permissions (simple read, write, full control etc) for each folder stored on the NAS.

Is all of this possible or will we need to go to a true server? If it is possible, does anyone have recommendations for a particular NAS solution that they are happy with?

    Thank you.

    Dan

    :)

RPC error: cannot connect to NAS drive

Since upgrading from Win7(64) to Win10(64), I have been unable to connect to my NAS drive (\\NET_DRIVE). While I can see the drive in windows for mapping a drive, File Explorer and Network Sharing, when I try to map the drive, I get the following error:
\\NET_DRIVE is not accessible.... A remote procedure call (RPC) protocol error occurred.

    • The NAS drive is connected to my WiFi router, not to a remote computer.
    • The user profile I'm using has administrative rights
    • This problem did not occur when running Windows 7. It started when I upgraded to Windows 10
How can I fix this so I can access my NAS drive?

  3. I cannot access a NAS as a guest user

Okay I read post, but the problem is that I need to access a public accessible folder on a NAS, not making one on my computer. The NAS is set up, to allow Guest accounts to access the folders.

I wont be able to make an account for all the users that will need access, they are only allow to read only access anyways.

If I make a user account with no password, the people who will access the NAS, will have access to more stuff on the NAS, that I can not disable, so the builtin Guest "account" are the only option I have as I see it now. At least if I can make it work on
    windows computers.

Larryh272 thank you for trying to help if you work for Microsoft you should ask them for a raise... If not then just ask them to pay you NAS access for remote users ;)
