Windows 10: Windows 10 driver updates will now be manual Optional Updates

Driver publishing can be complicated. Optional drivers have various methods of acquisition, which creates confusion. Starting now we are making changes to streamline things a bit. All partners will now be able to publish drivers as automatic! This grants access to driver flighting, and gradual rollout. Which will allow Microsoft, and our partners to detect issues earlier and take corrective action if necessary.

Weâve referred to this new publishing strategy as âManual Driversâ. Below weâve broken down the changes you will see in both Windows 10, and Hardware Dev Center.

Windows 10

Weâve tweaked the UX under the Setting page for Windows Update. The new Optional updates area will enable support teams to easily direct users to the right driver.

Hardware Dev Center

On the publication side, Hardware Dev Center (HDC) has made several changes to streamline the effort:

Opening the Automatic publication path to all driver manufacturers â enabling the entire ecosystem to benefit from Microsoftâs quality and reliability processes.

Creating a new set of Hardware APIâs (v2) with an Automatic shipping label as a default. The old Hardware APIâs (V1) will be deprecated the end of April 2020 to allow partners a smooth transition to the new version. Allowing Automatic drivers to be offered to Windows 10 clients during throttling via the new Windows Update UX, enabling support teams to quickly address driver issues in the field without waiting for a full release.

Changing the web UX default shipping label to âAutomaticâ. The âAutomaticâ delivery option will publish the driver both as Critical (CU) and Dynamic (DU).

The âManualâ delivery option requires the publisher to specifically choose it and explain the business justification for the choice. The drivers that are submitted through the âManualâ path will be offered to applicable machines through the new Windows Update UX.

These changes should be live before 5:00PM on February 19, 2020 (Redmond).

Need help updating hardware/software

The OP hasn't listed their OS, which makes a difference.
If it is Windows 10 he shouldn't have to update any drivers manually.

Windows 10 Update

Well just noticed a pretty large one pop up coming in at 914MB, seems it makes some pretty serous updates.

[Windows 10] hide/prohibit install of specific Windows Update

yep it does. the fairly simple group policy edit lets you keep the service running but stops the forced check/download, allowing you to:
A: ignore windows update until you forcibly update
B: use the tool i linked above before doing A: to prevent certain downloads from updating drivers
C: still use device manager to windows update specific drivers, disabling the service breaks this.

I have never intentionally used windows to provide my device drivers (except for older printers without Vendor drivers for clients). I only manually update from the vendor websites. Will just have to make a list of things to disable/remove if I finally decide to load it up on a machine.
