Win10/7 Dual boot issues & GPU performance

    Hi guys,

So I’m having issues with my computer and dual booting win7/win10.

First some info about my PC:

I have an older PC dell inspiron 1531

    Win 7/10 x64

With Toshiba OCZ SSD 2 partitions

    8gb RAM

    Nvidia GT 610 2gb DDR3 graphics card

Recently updated 6months ago PSU, Seasonic S12III 450W higher rated outout than oem

So up until January of this year I was strictly running Win7 with no issues, computer was running just fine. As Win7 neared its lifespan, I decided to upgrade to Win10. I ended up portioning my SSD 60/40, 60% dedicated to win7, 40% to win10. I installed win10 on my second partition, everything worked fine. Ran all updates, the only thing that was missing was boot menu, which I easily figured out, win7 just had to be loaded in CMD via bcdedit command.

For a about a week everything worked fine, I would turn the computer on, be greeted by win10 boot menu select between the win7/win10 and go about my business. Than about 2 weeks ago I started noticing issues. At the Win10 logo splash screen, the blue logo and loading icon would come out all pixelated and distorted. After which the screen would go dark, monitor would read out “no signal detected”, but the tower itself was on and I can hear the fans running at full speed. The only way out of it was for me to manually shut off the computer. And once I would do that and boot it up again everything would be fine, and I was able to log in and no issues at all.

I first started suspecting something was up with my GPU, so I reinstalled the drivers, ran some tests, changed the AVG cables, switched to HDMI and nothing. I figured that my GPU card is on its way out, so I bought a new one NVIDIA GT710 2gb DDR3, removed the old one, installed the new one, updated the drivers, everything showed up fine. Next day I boot up my computer and I’m greeted by the same screen/issue, pixelated/distorted logo & loading icon followed by blank screen, then once again I have to manually shut down the computer and reboot. So, I started to think it’s something within win10 specific update that’s causing this. I ended up resetting win10, ran through everything and once it was done everything seemed fine for few hours just to later be faced with same issue when booting up.

I started to think its possibly something with win10 side and loading everything correctly, so in my boot settings via msconfig and elevated command prompt, I set Win7 as default and win10 as secondary this way I would be greeted by win7 boot menu. When I restarted my computer, I was taken to win7 boot menu, everything ran good, selected which OS and continued on. Now next morning when I booted my computer, once again I was greeted with the win10 logo splash screen with same issues. I don’t even know why, when it was supposed to be win7 boot menu, it’s like something is overwriting my settings, and loading win10 boot menu, even though when I check, it still shows win7 as default. Once again i would have to manually shutdown & reboot and 2nd time it would work fine and load correctly. Anybody have any ideas what might be going on? I’m starting to run out of ideas. Any input, suggestions are appreciated. Image attached.

Dual-boot Win10/7 or go back to Win 7

    I run a dual boot of win7 and win10.
    I got 2x2TB barracudas and 2x512GB barracudas.
Unfortunately I once used the 512GB drives as raid0, just to fool around and so.
Got win 7 through an Acronis backup on the 2TB drive which runs fine, but used the raid for win8.1, again to fool around with.
Took some hassle to remove that dual boot since I didn't liked 8.1. But now win10 on the raid, still fooling around.

Takes some work to get things corrected if I want to move win10 to a different drive, but that's ok.
Just a bit too lazy to get an extra drive, and curious to see how long this inefficient raid setup will do actually. Only had to do a drive repair once, after installing win10 and some bsod (due to my own fault).

So my advice is to buy an extra drive, a sata3 2TB drive or whatever you can afford, and put it in dual boot.
The nice thing about extra drives is that they last you longer because you will use 1 of them for most of the time, leaving the others reasonably intact.
Windows 10 runs dual boot just as with previous versions, so shouldn't pose a problem.

  3. Performing Dual boot on the computer (Windows 10 and windows xp).

    Hi Vaibhav,

You will not face any system performance issues on performing dual boot by loading older Windows version first (Windows XP) and then the latest Windows version (Windows 10) on the computer.

To perform dual boot on the computer, you first have to create partitions to load both the OS onto the drives. Create disk partition by following the steps below and perform dual boot on the computer.

    • Press Windows logo + R keys on the keyboard to open
Run command, type diskmgmt.msc and press
      Enter.

    • Right click on OS(CWin10/7 Dual boot issues & GPU performance :) hard drive and select
      Shrink Volume.

    • Allocate the disk space in MB and click on
Shrink. An Unallocated drive will be created.

    • Right click on the Unallocated drive and select
New Simple Volume option. Follow the onscreen instructions and provide a drive name/letter in the process.

    • Perform dual boot and check if the issue is resolved on the computer.
