Windows 10: Inline headphone volume control

I bought a cheap (but highly rated) pair of headphones with inline mic and volume controls and although the earbuds and mic work great, the inline controls don't work. Is there something I need to do to get these working? I've got a Surface Pro 4 and am plugging them directly into the 3.5mm jack.

Headphones with inline control - N800

Is there any such headphones available for the N800, that have a control inline - so you don't have to use the screen each time you want to change a song? Or at the very least, is there software that can take advantage of a proprietary inline control/headphone
set?

MS Teams and Headphone inline volume/mute

My Plantronics Blackwire C320M inline mute and volume control works in Skype but in the new Teams meeting it doesn't. Am i doing something wrong, or is there a way to allow the control from the headset cable?

Earphones with inline controls and the Lumia 800

On further investigation the inline controls indeed do something. The volume +/- seem inactive as does clicking the play/pause/action button. However, holding the action button starts the voice control (as would be expected). This then turns out
to be fairly useless as the microphone in the inline controls doesn't seem to be working with the Lumia 800.
