Windows 10: Can't create new folders in exFAT drives only

I am using Windows 10 Professional on an HP Z800 workstation.

A weird issue has been bugging me for weeks now and I could not find any single clue on the internet.


My system includes several internal and external drives.

The external drives are formatted as exFAT so I can also use them to back up my MacBook Pro as well.


Windows 10 doesn't seem to be able to create a new folder in the exFAT drives.

When I right-click on the drive and select New > Folder, I get the following message.





The message doesn't seem to be relevant to the problem because I can definitely copy files of any size to the drive, from within the drive itself and from other drives. The same problem occurs if I try to copy to the drive any folder, even empty ones.

This is also true when I try to create or copy or move a folder using the command line or the shell, even with administrative elevated credentials.

No matter what I try, Windows 10 doesn't create folders on exFAT drives.


Again, this only affects exFAT drives. NTFS and FAT32 drives are perfectly fine.


I would appreciate any clue poitning me to the right direction, as this issue is starting driving me nuts!

Formating to exFAT

Hi Taylor,

If you want to format an external hard drive or USB flash drive in exFAT, you can follow these steps:

• Press and hold Windows key + x on your keyboard. This open the context menu.
• Select Command Prompt (Admin).
• Type format g: /FS:exFAT and then Enter to begin formatting the G drive as exFAT

The problem you've encountered in creating a folder could be caused by software or program conflict as the issue appeared a few days after installing the Windows 10 Creators update. For us to know if this only occurs when creating a new folder from the desktop,
we suggest that you try creating a new folder using a keyboard shortcut or from File Explorer. Please refer to the steps below:

Creating a new folder using a keyboard shortcut.

• Click on the desktop.
• Press CTRL + SHIFT + N.
• A new folder should be created.

Creating a new folder from File Explorer.

• Open File Explorer.
• Hover your mouse on the location where you want to create a new folder.
• Right-click it, go to New > Folder.

Can not create new folders

The information which you have provided is not enough for us to determine the issue. Please provide us more information.

• Does this issue persist while creating new folders in C drive or it occurs in all drive?
• Did you made any system changes prior to this issue?

This issue may arise due to bad sectors in disk drive. I would suggest you to repair the bad sectors on c: drive. To do this, kindly follow the steps suggested below.

• Press Start button and enter “Computer” in the Search box, tapping or clicking Apps, and then tapping or clicking Computer.
  
• Press and hold or right-click the C: drive, and then tap or click
  Properties.
• Tap or click the Tools tab, and then, under Error checking, tap or click
  Check. You might be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice.
  
• Follow the instructions. You might need to restart your PC after error checking is complete.

Now check if you can create folders in c: drive.

CHKDSK Disclaimer:

While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.
