WIndows Performance Gone Bad -- DNS

This AM my windows system's performance went into a nose dive tail spin?. It was hanging up on DNS resolution, delaying about 10-15 seconds every time it had to do a name resolution on an Internet site. Other things seemed to be quite slow as well, even when the internet wasn't explicitly involved, but that can happen in non-obvious ways.

Powering my laptop off then back on fixed the problem. It took me a bit to figure that out because I twice tried doing a restart via right click on start menu and that didn't help. That was mixed in with lots of other troubleshooting involving my router and a few specific name servers. Bypassing the router didn't help. Disabling IPV6 didn't help. Wireless vs wired didn't help. I also checked to see if there were any automatic updates over night there weren't. When I realized my wife's computer identical to mine, mostly wasn't having a problem I tied a power cycle on mine -- and that worked.

That's somewhat of a rant, but I do have a couple of questions:

    1. 1. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Is/was it only lately, perhaps since a recent Windows update?
    2. 2. Can anyone suggest what may have gone wrong? Perhaps there is something preventative I can do, besides an occasional power cycle.

A Google search didn't turn up any useful ideas that I hadn't already tried.

    :)

  2. Why did the startup window get cleared?

I didn't missed any step, the list was gone and gone , even after using lot of programs the programs were not listed in that list.

Boot the Macruium recovery again and try its 'Fix Windows Boot Problems' tool.

    Windows 10 DNS leak

No, went with a different 3rd party suggestion. Works better. I'm reliant on others for my tech needs that way.
