    Boot Errors

Background: I've been working with computers since the 80s. I still remember the TRS-80s that used cassette tapes for storage. My ex and I used to build computers so I am not unfamiliar with the beasties. I was off the grid for awhile and came back and am updating my own memory banks. I'm taking an online Intro to Computers class and the publisher's Pearson-Revel tutorial gives advice on what to do if you encounter problems with booting up. It suggests that you first try uninstalling any newly installed programs or drivers, but to only do that using "Uninstall" from the Control Panel. It then gives other suggestions that, in the past, could only be accomplished if you've successfully gotten in. I had the following questions for my instructor but she didn't know the answer and suggested I contact Microsoft where I got lost in their maze of support options looking for a simple "Email Us". So, here goes:

"Question: If you’ve installed new software/hardware, and your computer now isn’t booting properly, how are you supposed to get to the Control Panel or anywhere else to “Uninstall” it? Any time I’ve had a boot issue, I couldn’t get past the Windows startup screen or the command prompt or the blue screen of death in some cases. Sometimes, I could get it into Safe mode but that still limited what could be done. Is there something different now that will allow you to get in when the thing won’t start? Are we past the point now of needing emergency boot disks?

Prior to getting my new refurbished HP Pavilion desktop last November, I had to make-do with ancient laptops a Sony Vaio, a Compaq, and a Dell that started with XP, were "upgraded" first to Windows 7, then 10, then given to me as too outdated for my parents to use but good enough for me to use for another 4 years and are twitchy as hell. I had also been messing with my two even older XP desktops; they've since been turned into lovely shelf supports. Since I got my new desktop, I've not experienced a boot problem but have frequently wondered if I should make a boot disk just in case. Has that now gone by the wayside?"

Any info on this is appreciated!

I tryed playing in the BIOS along with using the Vista repair option but nothing helping.. my vista is on a different hard drive then where i tried to install XP to...not sure what else to do, I need to fix my boot file somehow... suggestions?

    Boot Errors

    laptop doesnt boot automatically

    This is what happened.

    1. Did a repair install and later disabled hibertnate in CMD.
    2. Enabled legacy option ROM in BIOS.
    3. After a few times startup ( i used the system in such mode for 5 days), changed boot option back to default.
    4. Vola!! It boots automatically to win10 without any keypress. Tested it with many starts to confirm the same.
    5. Re-enabled hibernate option using CMD and later selected Fast Startup.
    6. System booted normally, without the need for any keypress.

I do not know exactly whether such steps resolved the problem or what else happened, hence cannot suggest above steps.

Many thanks to all members who helped to troubleshoot problems.
