  1. Problem with HDs connected to Thunderbolt / USB-C ports

I have an HP laptop (model Spectre x360 15-BL012DX) that has 2 thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports. I've noticed 2 different, but likely related, odd behaviors when I connect HDs to these ports. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to what cause these symptoms as I'm simply coming up empty.

I should first note that the HDs that I am attaching are USB 3 2.5" drives that can be powered from a USB port. The drives have cables with standard USB 3 connectors and so I have to adapt these to work with a USB-C port.

Symptom #1: If I connect a HD using a short 6 inch USB-C to USB Type A adapter dongle, then the HD is not always seen by Windows. Windows detects that something was connected but File Explorer will sit there for a long time trying to refresh without ever showing me the newly connected HD. Other times it connects just fine.

If I now take a USB hub that plugs into the USB-C connector and plug the HD into one of the USB 3 Type A ports on the hub, the HD will work flawlessly. This is true whether or not I plug the hub into external power or not so this at least proves that the port on its own can supply enough power to the HD.

Symptom #2: Once again, I plug a HD into the USB-C port using the dongle. Let's assume that this time the HD is seen just fine and I can access the drive with no problem. When I am done using the drive, I use "Safely remove hardware and eject media" to disconnect the drive from my system. However, I find that the drive WILL ALWAYS reported as being in use and the utility will fail to eject the drive.

If I connect a HD using a hub, the drive can be successfully ejected every time.

Note that I have tried to use multiple different USB-C to USB 3 Type A dongles from various manufacturers, but the results are always the the same.

Summary: When connecting a USB 3 drive to a USB-C port using a USB-C to USB Type A adapter, I have problems. However, if I connect using a HUB, it works flawlessly. Does anyone have any ideas on why this may occur?

Test scenario is using the HP notebook listed above with Windows 10 1909 including the latest Feb 2020 updates.

    :)

  2. USB-C 3 Thunderbolt port on Asus ZenBook Pro won't cooperate with devices

Laptop: Asus ZenBook Pro ux501vw ds71t

    Problem:

I need to connect a firewire audio interface to this computer. It did not come with firewire ports. It has three USB3.0 ports, HDMI port, mic/headphones jack, SD card reader, and Thunderbolt 3 via USB Type-C. I was advised that thunderbolt can be adapted
to firewire. I bought the Apple adapters (no one else, it appears, makes these adapters). I bought the usb-c to thunderbolt 2, and connected the thunderbolt 2-to-firewire to that, and then ran the firewire audio interface into that.

At first, the USB-C port wasn't even recognized by Windows so I updated the firmware and activated the port. Once that was done I plugged in the first adapter and got an error message saying the device may be incompatible and may not work properly. In Device
Manager the screen keeps on refreshing.

Anyone encounter then solve this problem?

  3. Usb - c / thunderbolt issue

    Hi,

Recently purchased a Razer, currently transferring files over from my ATOM RAID 2 TB EXTERNAL SSD, USB-C / Thunder-Bolt 3 Drive to another External connected via USB 3 via Windows 10.

Any time I attempt to transfer files, the ATOM RAID begins to transfer and then the speed shoots to 0 and the drive is disconnected, then re-connected on its own accord it seems.

When I attempt to run Crystal Mark Test on it, it makes the disconnected Audio as the Test begins, with the test never being able to start.

Through the only process of elimination I have, I disconnected the drive and connected it via USB 3.0, with the cable provided and tests were fine and Crystal Mark was able to begin and finish. Unfortunately I don't have any other USB-C or Thunderbolt External Devices to test the port out.

The SSD worked flawlessly on my iMac 5K Thunderbolt 3 Drive.

I have formatted the Drive to NTFS, several times but that has not changed anything.

I have perused Device Manager, but I cannot find anything in specific detailing Thunderbolt or USB-C, only USB 3.0 and the device hence also appears under a USB 3.0 nomenclature. I haven't used Windows in sometime, so I'm unsure if USB-C is labeled USB 3.0 regardless.

    Attached are some screenshots.

The Drive is labeled VIOLENCE, even after failure of copying files, it remains connected it seems, or it disconnected and reconnects instantly. I hear two audibles, so I'm assuming the latter.

Hopefully I can resolve this today and hopefully it is not a Hardware Issue, my Razer Blade has been flawless otherwise

As you can see on the FINAL Image, Windows Devices labels is as USB 3.0, even though it is connected to the USB-C port

  4. Problem with HDs connected to Thunderbolt / USB-C ports

    Usb - c / thunderbolt issue

What I don't understand is why the USB 3.0 Port would put out more power than the USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 Port; when the TB3 Port is by its design, designed to put out more wattage.

The drive works fine on the 3.0 port, but fails to stay connected on USB-C, while other drives tested work fine on the USB-C.
