  1. Windows 10: USB storage drives flash drives or thumb drives only recognized if inserted...

Issue: any storage devices that are not powered external hard drives, thumb drives, etc aren't recognized by Windows 10 unless I do a restart with them inserted. After that, they appear to work, but I'd prefer not restarting every time I need to open a drive. Some things I've tried not a comprehensive list by any means, and not in any particular order:

-Uninstalling all USB hubs and reinstalling

-Turning off the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option for the USB hub

    -Scanning/fixing the registry

    -Updating the BIOS

-Updating the PCI driver recommended by a tech, wrecked the driver instead and I had to system restore it back to normal...didn't solve the USB issue anyway

    -Running a check disk command

    -Running sfc /scannow

    -Running DISM.EXE

-Booting into safe mode interestingly, got the same result--only drives plugged in were acknowledged by the system

    -Turning off fast boot

    -Several system restores

-Sitting online and on the phone with Microsoft techs for HOURS

-Swearing couldn't find a magic combination of expletives there either

-Dock USB ports--those don't work either

-Set UPnP and Plug and Play services to Automatic but haven't tested that fix yet; I just thought of it. Both were in manual when I switched just now.

Keyboards and mice work so far, as does powered storage like my phone--it reads both storage locations there just fine. Have tried in-place upgrade of Windows but that didn't do anything. Also tried

Build is Windows 10 for Workstations 1909. All updates have been installed and some of them walked back and reinstalled. Dell Precision 7520, Xeon processor.

    Anyone have any solutions?

Does anyone have a fix for this? Thanks in advance! Will post or update whichever it lets me do if I come up with a solution on my own.

    :)

  2. Recovery Drive for Windows 10 Doesn't Recognize USB Drive

When I try to create a Recovery Drive in Windows 10, Windows doesn't recognize the flash drive.

I'm following the instructions to create a Recovery Drive listed here:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-recovery-drive

    • From the taskbar, search for Create a recovery drive and then select it. You might be asked to enter an admin password or confirm your choice. (I was asked to confirm my choice, and I clicked "Yes".)

    • When the tool opens, make sure Back up system files to the recovery drive is selected and then select
      Next.

    • (Secret Step) Wait a minute or so for the "Please Wait" screen to finish thinking

    • Connect a USB drive to your PC, select it ...
The issue is that when I connect a USB drive to the PC, it doesn't appear on the "Connect a USB flash drive" screen as a drive that can be selected, and the "Next" button is grayed out.

However, when I look in File Explorer, I can see the USB drive plugged into the computer. Selecting Properties shows that Windows considers its Type to be "Removable Disk". (Sounds right to me.)

I'm not getting any error messages.

    My environment:

A brand new Toshiba Sattelite C55-C5241 laptop with Windows 10 Home. It's never had anything other than Windows 10 on it - unless they upgraded it at the factory.

A brand new ativa 8GB USB flash drive. Note that the packaging for the USB drive does not include Windows 10 in the System Requirements, but seriously?

    What I've tried:

    • Plugging the flash drive into all three USB ports (USB 2, USB 2, and USB 3)
    • Reformatting the flash drive with FAT32
    • Restarting the computer with the flash drive plugged in
    • Turning off Real-Time Scanning in McAffee

I've seen a few threads with this issue in Windows 8, but none of the potential solutions in those threads have worked for me. So here I am asking the same question, but for Windows 10.

Does anyone have any suggestions for resolving this issue?

    Thank you.

    Partition a USB Flash Drive

This is the scary stuff that happens when you use Google:

'USB flash drives cannot be partitioned in the Windows operating if the drive is identified as removable media. The only way to partition the USB flash drive is to flip the removable bit so that it is recognized as fixed media instead which can be partitioned like any normal hard drive'

    Infoz/Appz:
You searched for Boot It USB – Lancelhoff.com

Partition USB Flash Drives - gHacks Tech News

I got that from searching for 'partition flash drive'.

I should get paid for this.

Windows 10: USB storage drives flash drives or thumb drives only recognized if inserted...

    downloading pictures to thumb drive

    Hi Karen

Insert the USB Thumb drive into your PC

Open Windows File Explorer, create a folder on your Thumb Drive and open that folder

Open the Photos App, and resize the app so you can also see that folder in File Explorer

Select photos in the Photos App, so they are ticked, then just drag those to the folder Window and they will be copied onto the flash drive

    Alternatively

Open Windows File Explorer, navigate to your Pictures folder on your Hard drive, select some photos, right click and choose 'Send to' - your flash drive will be bottom of the send to list . . .
