Windows 10: Storage Other People using 25% of partition space:

I have a small SDD drive with the C: partition on it. All the other stuff is getting sent to the larger D: however there is no space left on the C: drive and it is fouling the performance. The culprit when I look at the storage is "Other People": it is taking 25% of the partition. When I go in there I just get the two users on the PC me and my wife and we only use about 1% between us on the user directory. I have even moved those to the D: drive with no change.


What is this Other People? Why does it not align with the user account usage. I can't find any answer in the database. Mostly it is just the usual optimisation advice. Is it some sort of cloud set aside? How do I clear it?

Partition space

You're not understanding this. Unallocated space is NOT equal as (partitioned) empty space.

Unallocated space means empty RAW sectors on HDD. Empty space means an already allocated file system (either FAT32 or NTFS or any other) that is not occupied by any data.

So in your case, as DanTheBanjoman already suggested, don't try to shrink "unallocated space", extend the main (C*Smile partition instead. You can't shrink something that doesn't exist (unallocated space), but you can extend the existing partition over unallocated space.
So, just select the C: partition and extend it further. Program should automatically allow you to do that. I'm not using Partition Magic, but i usually done this with either:
MiniTool Partition Wizard Free - manage and resize disk partitions (also for 64bit OS!)

or

EaseUS Partition Master - manage disk partitions (only for 32bit OS!)

 

Conflicting information on my Storage Space...

From disk management, it does report the same storage and used space as from explorer.
May I ask did you try to create a storage pool or something ? if so, you should not mess with this.

Is this disk an external disk connected via USB ? WD or Seagate branch ?

I have the feeling that this disk is formatted with GPT type using 512K emulation so Windows get confused. To verify:

1. Right click on Disk 6 ->Properties->Volumes. What does it show on partition styles ? GPT ?
2. Download Best Free Partition Manager for Windows | MiniTool Partition Free, install then run. What does it show on disk 7 ? MBR ?

If step 1 shows GPT and step 2 shows MBR then definitely the disk was formatted using 512K emulation. The reason they did this so that it would be recognized by WinXP or if you connect it to a TV.

Windows Updates failed is another problem you have. First, it tried to updates from 1703 -> 1709 and failed so any subsequent updates to 1803 also failed.

 

Adding a Partition to Storage Space in Windows 10
