Setup 'Windows Time' service to synchronize time only manually

Hello, we need to turn off automatic Windows 10 time synchronization on specific machines and trigger time synchronization requests only on specific times triggered by a .NET app.

We could not yet find other possible solution than using the tool 'w32tm' with option '/resync', executed as a process from inside the .NET application. But we could not find read google a way to turn off automatic time synchronization other than turning off the Windows Time service itself. And when the service is not running, 'w32tm' cannot be used, since it is a tool for manipulating the Windows Time service.

Could you help me with this task? Is this the correct, or at least a possible way to get the desired behavior? Is there another way to sync time ONLY on demand?

    :)

  2. unable to start the Windows time service on Windows 10

    Hi Enriq,

As you are facing issue with starting the Windows Time Service, do not worry we will help you with this issue.

Do let us know the following to assist you better with this issue:

    • What exactly happens when you try to turn on the service?
    • What is the complete error message/ error code of this issue?
    • Have you made any changes to the operating system prior to this issue?

Method 1: I suggest you to run a SFC scan and check if it helps.

System File Checkeris a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

    Follow the below steps:

    • Right click on the Start button, click on
      Command Prompt (Admin).
    • Type “sfc /scannow” without the quotes and hit
      Enter.
    • After the scan, restart the computer and check for the issue.

Note: If you are not able to repair some files after performing SFC scan, I suggest you to refer to the point 3 “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to
fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log”. Under the section “Run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)” to repair the corrupted files after performing SFC scan.

Refer: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Method 2: I suggest you to Restart Windows Time Service and check if it helps.

Windows Time Service maintains date and time synchronization on all clients and servers in the network. If this service is stopped date and time synchronization will be unavailable. If this service is disabled,
any services that explicitly depends on it will fail to start.

    Step 1: Stop the service:

    • Press Windows Key + R on the keyboard and type
      services.msc, Services window gets opened.
    • Search for Windows Time service and stop.
    • To do so, right click on each service select Stop
    • Restart the device.

Step 2: Start the service and set it to automatic:

    • Press Windows Key + R on the keyboard and type
      services.msc
      , Services window gets opened.
    • Search for Windows Time service, right click on it and click on
      Properties.
    • Start the service, set
      Startup type to Automatic.

Hope it helps. Kindly update the status of accessing the Windows Time Service for further assistance.

    Thank you.

    windows time service

Windows 10 Time Service Event Warning 134

Back in 2009, "by default, computers running the Windows Time service attempt to synchronize time *only with a domain controller *or a manually configured time source. Currently, the Windows Time service is synchronizing with a manually configured time source
peer (as opposed to a time source peer from the domain hierarchy)."

An Interesting place to start for more 'current' information:

Setup 'Windows Time' service to synchronize time only manually

Time synchronization with an internet time server does not work

    Hi,

Thank you for the answer. Below is the results of your suggestion:

    Method 1

Windows Time was not running. I started it and set it to automatic start.

I tried to see if synchronization would work with a manual activation. But no - still "An error occurred while retrieving the status of the last sync. Access denied.".

I rebooted and tried a manual activation again. But no - still "An error occurred while retrieving the status of the last sync. Access denied.".

I checked Windows Time service and it was still running and still in automatic

    Method 2

Is it fact the synchronization with a manual activation I tried in Method 1. Even though I cannot find a way to get to the settings by clicking on the clock

    Method 3

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>net stop w32time

    The Windows Time service stops.

The Windows Time service is stopped.

    C: \ WINDOWS \ system32> w32tm / unregister

    W32Time successfully unregistered.

    C: \ WINDOWS \ system32> w32tm / registry

    W32Time successfully registered.

    C: \ WINDOWS \ system32> just start w32time

    System error 1290 occurred.

The service did not start because one or more services in the same process have an incompatible service-SID type setting. A limited-service SID type service can only work in a process alongside other services with a limited SID type. If the service SID type
for this service has just been configured, the host process must be restarted for this service to start.

    C: \ WINDOWS \ system32> w32tm / resync

The following error occurred: The service has not been started. (0x80070426)

After a restart of the computer things does still not work and the Windows Time service is set to manual and cannot be started (expected after the error messages listed above. In fact it seem I am back to

    THIS
    problem.

So what do I do to fix this ?
