Windows 10: Updates fail 0x800f0922 KB4541335 and KB4551762

Things tried:

sfc /scannow and DISM

Rebuilding System Reserved partition from Windows boot media

Rebuilding the hidden MSR partition.

Bit of background, in case it is relevant.

Since last full wipe and reload of Windows 10 in March 2019, this PC at various times has dual- or triple-booted with Windows Server and Linux Mint, but presently is just Windows 10. As a result, I have found two System Reserved partitions and two MSR partitions when analysing from a Linux install pendrive. Most recent fix attempt was to delete two adjacent 300MB System Reserved partitions and create a new one in its space, and when that didn't work, I used Linux to delete all MSR partitions, shrank the new 600MB System Reserved partition to 470MB so I could delete the 16MB MSR partition placed before C: drive and then using diskpart on Windows install media, recreate it at the new recommended size of 128MB.


All of this I have tried because there is some suggestion online that error code 0x800f0922 is related to having a System Reserved partition under 500MB. At various times, in my diagnostic and repair attempts, it has had two at 300MB, one at 600MB and presently, one at 470MB. None of this has made any difference. I note, when I mount the System Reserved partition from a Linux installation media or give it a drive letter with diskpart, it's showing only 26.5MB used.


Updates still fail to install.

If the issue is still persisting, you can do a repair install of Windows 10 without affecting your files and apps:

1. Download and create your Windows 10 ISO by following the steps in this link:

2. Locate and right-click the ISO file, then click "Mount".

3. Go to File Explorer and open the virtual drive where the ISO is mounted. It's usually labeled "ESD-ISO".

4. Open setup.exe and follow the on-screen steps.

This repair process might take a while. Once it's completed, try installing the said updates again.
