Windows 10: Second screen only works, but not extend display

I'm having an issue with my fiance's laptop. She likes to work on two screens at home, so she has a monitor set up at her desk that she connects the laptop to to do work. Her laptop has been doing something really weird recently though. It shows in the display settings that there are two displays, but the second screen isn't showing anything. If you switch it to second screen only, it will display on her extra monitor, but the whole point is that she wants two screens.

Cannot extend display to second monitor

I am using windows 10 pro on my Powerspec desktop PC. I have one HP monitor and one AOC monitor. I had three monitors (one HP and 2 AOC monitors) working fine using extended display. After removing one monitor (now have 2), the extended display does not work any more. I can use "Duplicate these displays", "Show only on 1" or "Show only on 2", all work fine, except "Extend these displays". When I select Extended, the second screen shows up with task bar, but I cannot move any window onto the second screen. The mouse does not move over either. I tried update the display driver, rebooting computer, reconnect the cable, nothing works! What's wrong?

 

Extend Display to second and third monitors

I appreciate the efforts taken by you in resolving the issue. I understand that you are unable to extend the display to second or third monitor. I’ll certainly assist you with the issue.



However, it would be great if you can help us with the details requested below:

• What happens when you try to extend the display?
  
• Do you receive any error message/code?
  
• Are you aware of any changes made to the computer recently?
  
• Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer? To check type:
  winver in the search bar on the Taskbar and hit
  Enter.
  
• What is the make and model of the laptop?
  

Ideally, to extend the display we can use the shortcut Windows logo key + P, and select
Extend from the menu.

Hi Hans,

You may have to re-specify the display style on your laptop. There's a possibility that your laptop is currently set to only display the PC screen. Let's change the display style to
Extend or Duplicate and see if your laptop will recognize your TV as the second monitor/screen.

By the way, please ensure that your TV is properly connected to your laptop using a VGA, DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort cable, then follow the steps below to change the display style:

• Press the Windows key + P.
• In the right pane of your screen, the following display styles will appear:
  
  PC Screen Only
  
  Duplicate
  
  Extend
  
  Second Screen Only

3. Select either Duplicate or Extend.
