Microsoft Update Rebooting the Computer Without Permission is Unacceptable

Today when I was working on a project in my translation software, Windows 10 tried to reboot itself without my permission. A window was displayed saying that some applications are preventing the restart, which gave me the time to prevent the restart. But the application in which I was working has been forcefully closed anyways, and my progress was lost. By the way, this happened around 10:30AM despite the fact that I have set my working hours from 8:00AM to 5:00PM.

This has happened to me at least one more time in the past, at which time I also lost my progress.

This is completely unacceptable. A read through a similar thread, but it seems that Microsoft is not going to do anything about it. So I have installed a third party software "DontSleep" to prevent my computer from shutting down. But I am not sure if this will prevent the automatic reboot from closing any open applications.

Do you know of any software that prevents that as well?

    :)

What is the exact definition of "not using your computer" when it comes to Windows 10 rebooting automatically?

As of today's Windows 10 Pro update the "Notify to schedule restart" choice is no longer available so your suggestion will not work. BTW I was performing a large file transfer today and it was interrupted by an automatic reboot.

Even if your suggestion still worked, what would have happened if I weren't available or didn't notice that there was an update about to require a restart? In that case I wouldn't have known to "reschedule." Moot now I guess since the reschedule
option isn't even there. This is completely unacceptable. I'm afraid Windows 10 has become completely useless. There is too much danger that it will reboot during my work. That is equivalent to a crash--a crash that Microsoft has included "by design."

    Any other suggestions? Thanks

  3. My Pc got Rebooted without my permission (event id 1074, 1530, 916, Tons of EVENT During that Reboot time) URGENT HELP!!

My HTPC rebooted after some windows update - it runs Windows 10 and I haven't messed with things to disable the auto update features of the OS. My Win 7 computer, she didn't reboot, but I have it setup to not update anything without my permission.

My Win 7 work computer reboot for windows update - I get no control over this since updates are handled through the server.

So, last night Windows was kind enough to push out some kind of update(s) that required a restart seeing as it was the second Tuesday of the month.

    No permissions

    Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.
