Windows 10: How to prevent a link losing its icon when moving it?

A link loses its icon when moving it from the desktop to a folder. The icon appears again when the link is moved back from a folder to the desktop. Also in properties "change icon" does not work when I attempt to give the link that had lost its icon the icon it previously had manually.

That's because your resolution is changing each time. To test, try setting to 1024x768, arrange a couple of icons and then restart the PC. As long as the resolution after startup is still 1024x768, then the icons won't move. Trust me. *Wink

I see. I was using a 23" monitor before and the highest resolution was below 1080p so I guess windows remembers that monitors resolution right? I have tried de.das.dude suggestion, but everytime I turn off the computer after arranging the icons it goes back to misarranging the icons.

Method 1:

I would suggest you to try the steps and check if it helps.

• Right-click on the
  desktop and click on View.
• Uncheck the option Align icons to grid.
• Check if the issue persists.

I would like to suggest you to please check the issue in Safe mode and then in Clean boot. Follow the steps given here.

Step 1: Safe mode.

With the Windows Startup Settings screen (formerly advanced boot options) you can start Windows in different advanced troubleshooting modes so you can find and fix problems on your PC.

To log in safe mode, run command (press windows logo button+R) and type “msconfig”

A pop-up window will open and click on boot tap and select safe mode with minimal as option

If the issue does not arise here move to step 2

Step 2: Clean Boot.

Perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts. Follow these steps given in the link below to start the computer in clean boot
