Windows 10: I can't access my file due to permissions, is it possible to fix?

A couple of days ago I put some documents onto a USB because I was planning to reset my laptop, since it wasn't running it's best performance.


Once my computer reset I insert the USB and try to open the files. The files have a golden lock on the top right hand corner of each file word documents, photoshop documents, text documents, etc. and when I try to open them, a message saying "You do not have permission to open this file. See the owner of the file or an administrator to obtain permission." appears. Is it possible to access these files somehow?


I think the admin of these files was my computer, just before it reset - and it doesn't recognise my computer now as the admin. I can't copy or move the files to other locations outside of the USB like the Desktop.

I have a file i need to run on Windows 7 Home Premium. I get the error message saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

So I right click and choose Properties to access the permissions but I cannot. In the Security tab I get a message saying, " You do not have permission to view or edit this objects permission settings.".

Next I boot into the Windows 7 Hidden Administrator Mode - and even with this I get all the same error messages.

Please help me as I really need to run This file.

How was the files backed up, using File history or Backup and Restore?

This issue might have occurred due to lack of permissions set to the drive/ folder.

I suggest you to follow the below steps to set provide permission of the folders to users and check if it helps.

Steps to give permissions to the drive:

  Right-click on the folder which you’re unable to access and select
  Properties.
  
• 
  Click on Security tab and under
  Group or user names click on Edit.

  Click on Add and type
  Everyone.
  
• 
  Click on Check names and then click
  OK.

  Select Everyone and under
  Allow select Full control and click on
  Apply and Click Ok.
