Windows 10: Announcing Windows Admin Center Preview 1910.2

Hello Windows Insiders! Thank you for continuing to follow Windows Admin Center as it grows and develops! This release contains updates to the platformâs accessibility and numerous bug fixes. In addition, weâve evaluated user feedback and have implemented some highly requested features.

Whatâs new

Cut, copy, and paste in the Files tool

When you select a folder or file in the Files tool, users have the option to cut or copy the file or folder. After the file or folder is cut or copied, the paste option will become available, and a user can paste the file or folder into a different path.

Service restart

When managing machines using the Services tool, there is now an option to restart a service. There is no longer a need to start and stop a service in order to restart it.

Other major additions

Cluster quick update â On the cluster dashboard, updates for connected nodes will appear under the âAlertsâ section

File upload â when a large file upload fails, you are now able to retry the file upload

Virtual machine filters â When viewing a list of VMs with multiple filters applied, the VMs no longer disappear after some time

Azure Update Management login â Users no longer receive a logon error when they try to setup Azure update management after setting up Azure monitoring

Active Directory account creation â Weâve fixed an error in Active Directory Domain Services where accounts could be created with passwords that didnât meet the complexity requirements

In addition to the new features and fixes above, we are continuing to improve usability issues, focusing on making improvements to keyboard navigation and narrator support. Weâve also addressed reported bugs around CredSSP authentication.

Partner extensions

The Windows Admin Center ecosystem continues to expand with the release of new partner extensions and improvements on existing extensions.

Azure Security Center is now generally available

The Azure Security Center extension is no longer in preview and is now generally available! This extension brings hybrid cloud security capabilities to the WAC-managed servers and allows them to be protected by ASC through a one-click setup. Users of this extension will also see security recommendations and alerts in an embedded view in Windows Admin Center.

This integration is part of a larger WAC movement of bringing hybrid Azure services capabilities to on-premises environments. This extends on premise environments into Azure, allowing them to benefit from cutting edge cloud technologies on their on-premises workload, and is an important step as part of a lift and shift motion.

HPE WAC extension is now generally available

The HPE WAC extension combines the functionality of the HPE Server extension and the HPE Azure Stack HCI extension into a single extension for easier management. This extension utilizes HPEâ iLO technology to give users direct visibility into server inventory and diagnostics to manage and monitor HPE server infrastructure. Using this extension, users can:

See the health of their servers and remediation options (if necessary)

View the properties of server components (processor, memory, etc.) and BIOS settings

Surface and highlight cluster health and node inconsistencies

QCT Management Suite update

The QCT Management Suite is designed to help users manage and monitor their Windows Server hyper-converged infrastructure and QCT system configuration information on a single dashboard. With the upgrade to version 2.0.0, fixes and additions include:

Bug and typo fixes throughout the tool

Support for HCI mode on the Overview, Disk, Firmware, and Settings tab

Additional tooltips

Addition of dialog panels and drop-down lists in HCI mode

BMC account settings for Redfish support

An updated project site URL

Known issues

Virtual Machines tool performance line charts are styled incorrectly. This will be fixed in the next Release Candidate build.

Azure Monitor onboarding â If youâre managing a server or a cluster using âmanage asâ credentials, the onboarding may fail.

Network â If you have configured an Azure Network Adapter, the value under Microsoft Azure Virtual Network Gateway Address will be formatted as a hyperlink but leads to an invalid address.

Chrome users may see 403 Forbidden response from WAC after upgrading. The workaround is to close *all* open chrome tabs (make sure there are no chrome.exe processes running). After restarting chrome, everything will function normally. We have an error message that makes this clear, but chrome users with multiple windows admin center tabs open during upgrade will not see the message.

Performance Monitor has trouble loading certain v2 perf counter instances.

Performance Monitor can slow down less powerful machines (especially client computers).

Schedule restart tool in âUpdatesâ restarts immediately

Announcing general availability of Windows Admin Center version 1910

Today, we’re announcing the general availability of Windows Admin Center, version 1910. Server admins already trust Windows Admin Center to manage more than 3 million servers, and with today’s release, we’re delivering new functionality to make it easier to remotely manage your server workloads and take advantage of cloud services for your hybrid server environments.

Windows Admin Center quickly became a favorite IT tool by consolidating traditional Windows Server admin tools into a modern, browser-based remote management app for Windows Server running anywhere – physical, virtual, on-premises, in Azure, or in a hosted environment. It’s great for remote management and troubleshooting a virtual machine (VM), a server, or a cluster of servers. Many customers also use it as their go-to graphical user interface when running the Server Core option of Windows Server.

Highlights of what’s new today include:

New hybrid capabilities with Azure

Windows Admin Center includes streamlined integration to help you extend on-premises servers and networks seamlessly to Azure for hybrid capabilities. Here are just a few of the new features:

Azure Arc enables you to easily connect your servers to Azure and use unified management and governance centrally from Azure. You can use Windows Admin Center to connect your on-premises servers to Azure Arc agents with just a few clicks.

Integrate with Azure Security Center, for end-to-end threat monitoring across both on-premises and Azure for your server workloads. This Azure service gives you the benefit of 3,500 Microsoft security experts who track more than 6.5 trillion threats every day and build that knowledge into cloud offerings that help you protect your Windows Server workloads wherever they are.

Azure Monitor is now even more powerful in Windows Admin Center. In just a few clicks, you can turn on a set of default alerts to notify you about server and cluster performance health via email, so you can more proactively manage your servers and address issues before they become problems.

Azure Extended Networking makes it easier to extend on-premises server networks and IP subnets to Azure without breaking IP dependencies. This feature removes some of the complexities of connecting your on-premises network to the cloud.

Create new Azure Virtual Machines from within Windows Admin Center and gain additional server capacity in the cloud with just a few clicks.

Storage Migration Service helps migrate on-premises file servers to Azure, and upgrade to newer versions of Windows Server in the process. Using Windows Admin Center, you can create Azure Virtual Machines on the fly during migration, automatically size them, provision them with formatted storage, and join them to your domain – while allowing you to migrate from legacy operating systems, Samba on Linux, and standalone servers to the latest versions of Windows Server and failover clusters.

Integration with Azure File Sync now allows you to configure Storage Sync Services and set up Azure File Sync for your on-premises servers without ever leaving Windows Admin Center.

Windows Admin Center now supports creating Azure Virtual Machines on the fly during setup of new asynchronous replication partnerships so you can use Azure as your secondary site for Storage Replica, helping to protect your business from disasters with minimal data loss.

New and improved tools for Windows Server management

We’ve added more core management capabilities for managing servers, virtual machines, clusters, and hyperconverged infrastructure.

When apps or servers are running slower than usual, one of the first things that server admins check is Windows performance counters. In version 1910, we are pleased to preview a reimagined Performance Monitor. Early adopters tell us they love the new graphical views and the ability to customize views for their environment. Windows Admin Center now fully supports live migration between Hyper-V servers and clusters. Manage your on-premises Hyper-V VMs with ease using the new VM import/export and VM tagging features.

Simplify management of your web applications with the IIS management tool in Windows Admin Center.

The new packet monitoring tool in Windows Admin Center delivers insights via network troubleshooting and diagnostics.

Based on customer feedback, we’ve also made numerous improvements to core tools such as updates, files, and server/cluster settings. Read the full list of what’s new in this release

Streamlined setup and enhanced tools for hyperconverged systems

As customers refresh aging on-premises servers and storage, many are adopting hyperconverged (HCI) systems for improvements in cost and performance. Windows Admin Center now provides a wizard to streamline the initial deployment of HCI clusters, as well as new tools to help with your day-to-day management of Azure Stack HCI or Windows Server 2019 hyperconverged systems.

The smoothest path to HCI is using a pre-validated system from our partners. We encourage you to check out our HCI partner directory to find more than 150 pre-validated partner configurations.

New and updated partner extensions

We are also pleased to announce new Windows Admin Center partner extensions from Dell EMC (released in August 2019) and HPE, as well as updated extensions from DataON, Lenovo, QCT and Thomas-Krenn.AG, to provide detailed hardware management for Windows Server and Azure Stack HCI solutions. Other partner extensions offer server configuration change tracking (BiitOps), and flash array management (Pure Storage).

Hello Windows Insiders!

Thank you for your continued interest in the Windows Admin Center insider preview! If you are new to the preview, check out last month’s post Announcing Windows Admin Center Insider Preview 1806 to learn the difference between GA and Preview versions, and review all the new features in the 1806 preview.

Release Summary

July’s release brings a new streamlined experience to connect your gateway to Azure, as well as a top customer request:

The Virtual machine inventory page now supports multi-select so that you can perform actions on multiple VMs at once!

Completely new functionality in this release consists of new file sharing functionality in the files tool, and Azure update management integration in the updates tool. These new features are described in detail below.

New Functionality

File Sharing

You can now add, edit, and remove shares from the Files tool! Fine-tune access with the ability to add and remove users and groups, as well as control their permission level. This highly anticipated feature is in preview, we are still busy making improvements! Stay tuned for additional sharing features and updates in upcoming releases.

Azure Update

We’ve added another way to easily leverage the power of Azure from your own environment with Azure Update Management integration in the Updates tool. Azure Update Management is a free service in Azure Automation that enables you to easily keep all the servers in your environment up to date, letting you manage and push updates from a single place, rather than on a per-server basis. Learn more about Azure Update Management.

With Windows Admin Center, you can easily set up and use Azure Update Management to keep your managed servers up to date. If you don’t already have an Azure Monitoring workspace in your Azure subscription, Windows Admin Center will automatically configure your server and create the necessary Azure resources in the subscription and location you specify. If you have an existing Azure Monitoring workspace, Windows Admin Center can automatically configure your server to consume updates from Azure Update Management.

To get started, go to the Updates tool in a server connection and select “Keep your server up-to-date with Azure Update Management”, and provide your preferences for the related Azure resources.

Note that you must register your Windows Admin Center gateway with Azure before using this feature.

Updated Functionality

Register WAC gateway with Azure (no manual PowerShell dependency)

It’s now easier to use Azure integration features in Windows Admin Center. Previously, in order to use an Azure integration feature, you had to download and run a PowerShell script outside of Windows Admin Center. We’ve removed the requirement for this script and you can now register your gateway to Azure without leaving Windows Admin Center. To register your gateway to Azure, go to Windows Admin Center > Settings > Azure and click “Register”.

Filter connections based on tags

You can now filter your connections list based on tags. Simply click the filter icon next to the search bar and select the tags you wish to filter. You can filter multiple tags using OR, AND, or NOT queries to tailor your filter results.

NOTE: See the known issue with multiselect and tag filtering listed in the known issues section below.

Miscellaneous improvements

The Server overview pane now contains the Windows Defender status.

Multiselect in grid – in addition to the aforementioned Virtual machine inventory, the multiselect functionality has been added in various locations, such as managing group membership in Local Users & Groups.

Scheduled tasks – multiple triggers are now supported.

Known issues in this release

Localization – some text strings in the new features are not yet localized.

Azure Update Management – you must manually refresh the page after configuring Azure update management. [18062195]

Microsoft Edge Browser – if you have Windows Admin Center installed as a service and using Microsoft Edge as your browser, connecting your gateway to Azure will fail after spawning a new (blank) browser tab. [17990376]

Tag filtering – if you select connections using the multiselect checkboxes, then filter your connection list by tags, the original selection persists so any action you select will apply to all the previously selected machines. [18099259]

Remote App feature of Remote Desktop – Remote App connections may fail. Regular, full Remote Desktop connections are not affected.

Azure integration – if you encounter issues registering your gateway with Azure, visit the troubleshooting guide.
