Would it cause problems if I quit OneDrive in Task Manager?

So, today, "Microsoft OneDrive (32 bit)" decided that it needs almost 40% of my CPU for god-knows-what. I've never even used it, since I just copy important stuff over to an external hardrive, maybe a USB-stick or two if it's really important. So is there any harm in just quitting it through Task Manager? On another note, can someone tell me what it's doing in the first place? Again, never used it in my life, so I don't know why quitting it would be a problem. Still, I'd rather ask someone before doing so, because I don't feel safe making assumptions when it comes to computers.

  2. Onedrive is causing a ton of problems

    Thank you for your answers!

No there weren't any noticeable changes in my system configuration since the problems has been started (over 2 years ago :/).

I tried all the suggestions in this
    thread
    and a few others including:

    • Uninstall OneDrive - reinstall
    • Unlink OneDrive - relink
    • Reinstall whole operation system

I think it might have been something todo with my MS Account, because the OneDrive client on my home PC is also used by my wife and everything works fine there. Strange behavior only appears with my account.

    @Grey

My OneDrive is on a separate partition but I have the same problems before as well. The many icons you see are going away when I go over with the mouse pointer, but it shows how often my OneDrive is crashing and restarting.

Performance is even better when I kill the OneDrive and DocumentCache Task in the Task Manager - everything goes back to normal.

    Update causes task manager problems

After logging on yesterday, I got the 'Updating Windows' message. along with the whirlygig, after it was finished the Task Manager did not function.
IF I clicked on one of the icons, nothing would happen. This also affected the window icon in the lower left corner of the screen and the icons in the lower right(speaker volume etc).

I've had hard drive problems in the past which may be the cause, but since this happened immediately after the update, I'm inclined to believe the cause was the update.

The only way I can start say Excel is to click on an Excel file on the desktop to activate excel.

    Any suggestions?

  4. Would it cause problems if I quit OneDrive in Task Manager?

    Windows 10 - OneDrive

Right click on the app and one of the properties has an option to not automatically start it. Uncheck, restart the computer, and it should stop. If you want to go another step further, find the OneDrive app in the start menu, right click on it and uninstall.

If that is still insufficient, there is a batch uninstaller for OneDrive available online. I can copy the code here if you need it.
