Network Attached Storage NAS Permissions Issues

I have a Seagate Personnel Cloud NAS device. When attempting to delete files or folders I receive the error message "You need permission to perform this action". The Seagate tech who I consulted with directed me to a Microsoft solution to the problem at : answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/destination-folder-access-denied-you-need/8bbdceb2-1dcd-4ee4-b5e2-fee7cbbdc40a

The above solution says to right click on a folder/file, select Properties > Security. However, at this point I receive the error message "The permissions on Data are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective." When I click OK, then click on the "Advanced" button I receive the same error message again, however, with the additional options of "Reorder" or "Cancel". I select "Reorder" and the "Advanced " box comes up indicating that the "Owner:" is "nobody Unix User\nobody". According to the Microsoft solution above it necessary to "change" the Owner to "Everyone" and provide the new Owner with full control which I am able to do. Although, when I select Apply or OK to the change I receive the error message "Unable to set new owner on Data. This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object." At this point I have to "cancel" the Advance option which negates the previous actions and doesn't resolve the permissions problem.

When I perform the same steps on my external hard drive and select Properties the dialog box provides, in addition to "Security" it also has a "Sharing" tab which doesn't appear on the NAS drive's folder/files "Properties".

How can I set the same Administrative Permissions to the NAS device as they apply to the external hard drive?

    :)

  2. Network attached storage (NAS)

OKAY... I get the laptop thru all the updates by using the troubleshooter. Now I still cannot see my NAS in file explorer BUT there is one file listed in quick access that is on the NAS. If I open file location I can see everything on the NAS (WOOHOO)
but if I close file explorer and reopen it the NAS does not appear(?).

I am sure there is a small tweak that needs to be made but at least if I don't loose the quick access I will be able to access my files.

    One step forward!!!!

    Thanks,

    Len

  3. Network Attached Storage (NAS) recommendations

From another thread I posted about accessing the c$ on computers on my network, an idea formed. What if I just had a NAS setup, then any computer on my network (including visitors to the house), can access data.

Now I am looking for suggestions on a decent NAS, with network access (not USB). Any ideas?

I know I probably want one with 2 hard drives in it, for redundancy and to setup a RAID of sorts.
Alas, that might be on the expensive side.

    Regardless, looking for ideas.

    Thanks all

PS: Mods, feel free to move this, if it is in the wrong place. Couldn't decide if this under hardware or networking...

    Network attached storage (NAS)

    OK Andre,

I am back on my desktop. I shut it down and restarted it and it took a long time to boot BUT when I went to file explorer I heard the NAS disks start up but I still could not "see" the disk or its contents. Maybe one step forward?

As far as the above things to try, I will have to wait until this evening to try the things you suggested. My daughter does work from home and requires use of the internet so I had better not turn it off!!!!!

I will continue to try to update the desktop with the latest version of windows.

    Thanks,

    Len
