Chkdsk seems to have stopped before complete

I am running chkdsk P: /r on a new 8TB internal drive before putting it in service. I just noticed in the command prompt window, it seems to have stopped. The progress and ETA are not changing. I think it has been that way for at least 2 hours.

I opened disk management, right clicked in the wide area below the blue bar for that drive, selected properties and got the popup shown below. Disk management takes 20 to 60 seconds to load while showing "connecting to virtual disk service".

I'm not sure what to do. Could chkdsk still be running, but not updating the UI? If not, what are my choices to restart without destroying or damaging the disk?

    Thanks

    :)

    chkdsk c: /F

It might be an error on the drive. We suggests that you follow the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Run Disk Cleanup utility to clear your junk files.
    • Open an elevated CMD type sfc /scannow and hit Enter to run the System File Checker.
    • Once the scan is completed, restart your computer. Remember to exit ChkDsk
      during boot.
    • Next, again open CMD as admin type
      Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
and hit Enter to repair the Windows image.
    • Now see if ChkDsk able to complete the scan.

Note: Before doing the steps, make sure you save a back up of your files.

Let us know how it goes.

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond Chkdsk seems to have stopped before complete :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.
