  1. Device driver in Windows 10 Feature Update 1909 breaks USB headset microphone

    Hello all,

I have a Lenovo T480 Windows 10 laptop which recently got upgraded from version 1809 to 1909 build 18363.720:. I had a Sennheiser PC 7 USB headset:

    https://www.eposaudio.com/en/de/gaming/products/pc-7-usb-voice-over-ip-headset-504196

The headset used to work perfectly before but after the upgrade, the microphone stopped working. When I go to Control Panel => Sound, the microphone appears to be ready for use:

If I go to Configure => Set up Microphone, I get this error message:

Device driver in Windows 10 Feature Update 1909 breaks USB headset microphone ecc4e885-d534-4f23-9671-012b745255f9?upload=true.png

When I look at the Device Manager => Device => Events tab, I see "Device not migrated" error events:

Device driver in Windows 10 Feature Update 1909 breaks USB headset microphone bc5d5cd6-8edd-4a86-a6ff-f639af6f5a1a?upload=true.png

This is the text from the Information field:

Device SWD\MMDEVAPI\{0.0.1.00000000}.{da03e85b-4dc3-4d18-acbf-810ea60a57fd} was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

    Last Device Instance Id: SWD\MMDEVAPI\{0.0.0.00000000}.{12c27b8a-b716-4012-a380-a3f52a312ba8}
    Class Guid: {c166523c-fe0c-4a94-a586-f1a80cfbbf3e}
    Location Path:
    Migration Rank: 0xF00000000000F120
    Present: false
    Status: 0xC0000719

I have tried repeatedly to uninstall the device, reboot the system and reattach the headset but the same error message appears and the microphone does not work. The headphones work well.

I have tried running the Recording Audio troubleshooter but it does not find any issues with the device:

Attaching the headset to a different USB port also does not resolve the issue.

It appears that the "Device not migrated" issue is also experienced by other users, e.g.:

    From that link, I quote:

Yes it looks like once again Windows Update is trying to install an incompatible driver on your system

Your best option would be to either roll back to the previous Driver, download the newest driver from the Realtek website, or possibly the best option is to download the driver from the support page of the manufacturer of your system

The problem with trying to rolling back the driver for the Sennheiser headset is that it does not use the vendor supplied driver but rather a Windows built in driver:

Device driver in Windows 10 Feature Update 1909 breaks USB headset microphone 56c7b594-ac11-4cc8-81cf-8749632f720e?upload=true.png

As can be seen, the "Roll Back Driver" option is also grayed out.

As the computer had Feature Update 1909 running for more than 10 days, I could not restore version 1809 to confirm if that would restore the microphone functionality. Reinstalling/resetting Windows would probably solve the issue but a I do not want to reinstall all my programs again and b when Windows Update upgrades again to 1909 the problem will probably resurface.

I was successfully able to use the microphone in a somewhat older computer running Windows 10 version 1607. On this computer, I notice that it uses an older Microsoft driver, version 10.0.14393.0 published on 15 Jul 16:

Device driver in Windows 10 Feature Update 1909 breaks USB headset microphone a5eba3d3-24db-40dd-9620-05c4a6296330?upload=true.png

The driver in use on the newer computer is 10.0.18362.1, as seen in previous screenshot. I tried copying over the Microsoft driver files from the old computer to the new one, and forcing Windows to update to use the older driver file. However this still does not resolve the problem.

Any other ideas on fixing this problem? Thanks.

    :)

Sennheiser GSP 350. Microphone stops working when I open any game

Wow, ok. I think I've fixed it by accident while fiddling around.

It appears to be the Realtek audio being the issue here. I don't use my onboard sound card as my headset is a USB headset only and my speakers are plugged into an ASUS sound card.

    Step by step fix:
    • I went into recording devices
    • I enabled STEREO MIX (Realtek High Definition Audio)
    • Then I set that Stereo Mix as the DEFAULT DEVICE (At this point it took over both input and output devices without my permission )
    • Then set my Sennheiser headset as default recording and playback devices in their respective windows even though they both still said they were the default devices when they weren't
Headset microphone is currently functioning while in game now. I'll update the thread if it goes again. Should I completely disable Realtek audio??? Or will windows just force it to work again?

  3. Headset microphone problems Windows 10

    Hello Steyn,

Thank you for posting your concern in Microsoft community and welcome to the Windows 10 Family.

From the description provided, I understand that windows is unable to configure the microphone settings for your headset device.

I would suggest you to use the below steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

    Run the Microphone Setup Wizard

    • Type “Set up Mic” in Cortana’s Search box.

    • Follow the instructions provided to set up your microphone.
    Check your microphone’s drivers

    • Type in “Device Manager” in the Search box and select it from the list.

    • Expand Sound, video and game controllers

    • Right-click (or tap and hold) your microphone device and select
      Update Driver Software.

    • Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
This option will scan the Internet for the correct version of the driver or determine if you already have the most recent driver installed.
You may be prompted to restart your computer to install the driver.
Manually turn up the mic gain

    • Type in “Sound” in the Search box and select
      Sound (Control Panel)
      from the list.

    • Select the Recording tab.

    • Right-click (or tap and hold) on the active microphone input device and select
      Properties.

    • Select the Levels tab.

    • Manually drag the Microphone gain to a higher level and click
      Apply.
Write to us with the updated information. If the issue still persists we would be happy to help you.

    Thank you.

  4. Device driver in Windows 10 Feature Update 1909 breaks USB headset microphone

Window update broke Headset Microphone (HyperX Cloud2)

Update Windows a few days ago, (Windows 10), and immediately my headset microphone will not work. Tried restarting, reinstalling all drivers, enabling and disabling devices, ect. Window's update messed with the recording driver or something somehow, crazy
how such a "good" company can get things wrong on such a consistent basis. Headset is a HyperXCloud2, USB. Audio still works perfectly, its the microphone that will not be seen by any programs, yet is listed as active and working under devices. Took the headset
to another computer that ISNT on Windows, and it worked just fine.
