Windows 10: webcam stopped working

My webcam stopped working. If I start the camera app there is a screen of dark colored static, never an image.

Have uninstalled & reinstalled cameras regular and infrared, updated drivers, rolled back drivers, repeatedly scanned for hardware changes, dxdiag, webcam troubleshooting, no result. Went to HP to install updates. Went to uninstall Win10 updates made in Feb think camera was working in January.


HP Elitebook 360 new in Nov, camera worked at first. Win10 Home.


Device Manager does not have an Imaging entry. It has Cameras entry. See attachment.


I tried to go back to a restore point but it failed, saying insufficient disk space; my backups are on external drives since my SSD is not that roomy. It is partitioned so that data is separate from OS, with 10-20% free space on OS.


[I really do not want to do a fresh Windows install because it takes days to get IIS, IIS Express, SSMS, Visual Studio to all work so I can develop websites. If MS would only make it easier to get those programs to play together nicely - but localhost gives me many problems each new laptop.]

Webcam had disappeared

The webcam may have stopped working due to hardware failure, or a loose cable that connects it to the device’s motherboard. We suggest that you try to show hidden devices in
Device Manager by following these steps:

• Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
• Click on the View tab and select Show hidden devices.
  

If you are seeing the webcam drivers, uninstall them. Then restart your device to check if Windows will be able to recognize the webcam and will install the drivers.
