  1. Unable to update Win10, due to increased Windows HD requirements

I have a very minimal HP notebook computer that came with Windows 10. It has a 20 GB solid-state drive that's basically an SD card soldered to the circuit board, so it can't be increased. Windows is at version 1809, and Windows can longer be updated as the minimum requirements jumped to 32 GB starting with version 1903.

Unfortunately, the Windows Automatic Updating WAU system doesn't check drive space before downloading update files. So, it downloads the files, and then, predictably, the updates always fail.

I have three questions regarding this situation:

    1. With Windows no longer able to update to the current versions, will Defender still update?

    2. If I completely, permanently disable WAU, will Defender still update? I understand that Microsoft makes it very difficult to completely stop Windows updates, but I know how to do it. The downloads and always-failing automated attempts to update not only waste my time, but the files it downloads severely cut into the already minimal free space on that C drive. In fact, it uses so much space that Windows frequently complains about low disk space, which I then free up -- and then WAU starts the cycle all over again.

    3. I have a 128 GB SD card plugged into the SD slot on the computer, as drive E. Is there any way that Windows can use some of that space to update itself?

Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

    :)

Planning to download the latest Win10.ISO (vers.1803) and manually update:
    - Then wait that my ordered new SSD arrives and clone the old HDD to it.

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond Unable to update Win10, due to increased Windows HD requirements :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.
