  1. Can't boot machine after forced shutdown due to BitLocker encryption of drive

A couple days ago, I woke my machine running Windows 10 from sleep. The login screen was completely frozen no response from fingerprint reader/keyboard/trackpad for ~5 mins so I forced a shutdown by holding down the power button. On trying to power the machine back on, I was greeted by the BitLocker screen requesting the recovery key in order to boot. Please note that:

    1. I never explicitly turned on BitLocker. I'm running Windows 10 Home Edition version 1903 and from what I've read online, BitLocker should not be turned on by default for this machine.
    2. I was logged into the machine with a Microsoft @live.com account, and the device shows up in the account up-to-date as of Apr 4, 2020. However, the only recovery key listed under the account does not work for my drive the recovery key ID is different but I tried it anyway.
    3. I checked both work and school Microsoft accounts I might have signed into the device with and neither of them have a recovery key associated with my device in their Azure Active Directory.

I'd appreciate any advice on how to proceed from here. There is some important data on the drive so I'd really like to be able to recover it.

    Thanks!

    :)

  4. Can't boot machine after forced shutdown due to BitLocker encryption of drive

Can't get Bitlocker to encrypt C: drive

Thanks for your reply. I have not looked at the BIOS settings. Have not changed the BIOS since I originally encrypted the drive a couple of years ago, and it worked fine then, but it's worth a look.

I'll take a look at the settings when I'm in my office again and report back.

OK. Looked at BIOS, enabled Secure Boot and UEFI, computer would not boot. Went back to Legacy Boot and UEFI disabled. Booted.

Went though Bitlocker setup again, this time at final stage, unchecked "Run Bitlocker system check," and encryption started. Tomorrow I'll see if I have created other problems. If so, probably next step is to wipe the hard disk and start over.

Final post: What I did above worked. Drive is encrypted. When I restarted, I got the expected blue screen asking for my password. So all is well . . . at least so it seems.

Thanks to those who offered suggestions. I appreciate your input so much!
