Windows Taskbar is freezing/unresponsive, and programs will not open Please Help

I am going to try my best to explain exactly what happened and what is currently going on. I tried to connect my surface pro laptop to my Samsung smart TV. It did not work and seems to have crashed all of my programs including edge, my email, word, to name a few. I restarted my laptop to see if that would fix my problem, it did not. Now the taskbar at the bottom is unresponsive, so I opened task manager and restarted windows. This fixes the responsiveness somewhat and only for a short time, it seems by the time that it has finished completely loading everything the problem has occurred again. I am able to only interact with the task view symbol during this short period. The start menu and all other symbols highlight but do not open. I also now cannot open edge, word, or any other program besides Firefox. I have looked for other answers on here I have found some similar cases but nothing has seemed to work. Also, in between the battery and volume symbols in the bottom right there is now a symbol that previously was never there, or at least was not showing, it looks like a monitor with a wire. I am thinking this is a wired internet connect however I am set up wireless internet and have never connected through wired internet connection before. I do not know if that has anything to do with the problem however I figured I would say just because it is something that has only started happening when this problem started. I am college student and really need this fixed as soon as possible with all classes being moved online, so ahead of time thank you to anyone who responds to this.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Taskbar Unresponsive.

    Dear Amma,

Sorry for the trouble, here are few steps that I would suggest:

    • Press the Windows + X
    • Open the Command Prompt (Admin)
    • Now type the command as " Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
    • Push Enter
    • Restart the system.
    • Now see if the issue persists
    • If it persists the only option is to create a new user admin account.

Do let me know if it helped and please mark the answer as helpful if it helped.

I appreciate the assistance, but the Windows key doesn't respond to my pressing.

Programs become unresponsive in Windows 10

    Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried both with different results.

    Step 1: Safe Mode:

This seemed to work and I could save a file in Word without the program becoming "Unresponsive".

    Step 2: Clean Boot:

This did not work and Word would become unresponsive when trying to save a file.

I did notice another odd thing. It seems that sometimes (not often) Word would work the first time I used it If I close it and reopened it the unresponsive behavior returned. I tried opening Word several time but it remained unresponsive.

This is very frustrating as I use Word daily.
