  1. Security customization for Standard user account Win10 - laptops for student loan

    Hi,

I'm tearing my hair out with this, it seems the Windows 10 account system is set up to make everything I'd like to do uniquely difficult, but I can't be the only one in this position :

I'm building laptops on Windows 10 to loan out to college students: on each laptop we have an Administrator account, tied to a team Microsoft account which is great for tracking the location of non-returners at the end of the year and locking down remotely. Then we have a standard Student account, which the student can log into, tie to their own MS account, put their passwords on as they wish, etc. It works great so far, but the User Account Control is very restrictive, blocking them from even receiving updates for Office without our admin pin, which has become very difficult to work around now that everything is in lockdown.

Basically, I'd like to know how I can change or circumvent the UAC settings so that a standard user doesn't get the UAC prompt, so they can install their own software and update whenever they like.

First, I've looked in secpol.msc and tried changing Local Policies - Security Options - User Account Control: Detect Application installations ... and restarted but it still asks for UAC permission.

On top of that, secpol.msc is only available on W10 Pro - despite having a key for Pro, roughly half of our laptops downgraded to Home during w10 installation for reasons I can't fathom; the option for Pro just didn't show up during installation, but that's another issue.

I can't just make the Student account an admin, as they could use the admin rights to just delete our own Administrator account and we'd lose the tracking and locking options.

I also tried enabling the built-in Admin account via cmd, thinking that I could then give the student admin rights and they couldn't delete the built-in account without hassle at least. The issue there is that I can't tie a Microsoft account to the built-in admin, again losing the ability to track and lock remotely.

I'm out of ideas. We can't be the only ones wanting to deploy laptops to students in this way. If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

    Thanks in advance :

    :)

    admin & standard user accounts

    Hi Pub Fan,

You can create a new user account on your computer and set is as an administrator. Follow the steps provided on this

    page
. Once you have added a new administrator account, you can change the account type of the original user profile to standard. You can also remove the password for the original account using the new one. Here are the steps:

    • Sign in to the new user account.
    • Go to Control Panel.
    • Open User Accounts.
    • Click on User Accounts.
    • Click on Manage another account.
    • Select the old user profile.
    • Select Change the password.
    • Without typing anything in the password fields, click on Change password.
You will not lose any passwords for your internet sites after applying the changes.

Let us know if you need more help.

Is a standard user account necessary for tight security and home user?

I would give each user their own standard account for extra security and keep an admin account for system maintenance. I also have a reserve admin account on my PC in case of problems with the main admin account!

I've also set my admin account to be a local rather than Microsoft account.

You can run many admin tasks from a standard account but you will get an UAC prompt for the admin password.

Is a standard user account necessary for tight security and home user?

Is a standard user account really necessary for tight security for the home user or will a well secured administrator account be sufficient?
