New Skype Preview UWP app 11.7.79.0

Microsoft has released a new update to the Skype Preview UWP app, bumping the version to 11.7.79.0. While there is no detailed changelog, the new version may bring the usual bug fixes and improvements but we also spotted one new feature: it’s now possible to choose it as one of the apps that can show quick status on the lock screen:

This new feature is welcome as it definitely makes it easier to know if you recently received Skype notifications. However, the Skype Preview still can’t be chosen as your app of choice to show detailed status on the lock screen...

To our Windows Insiders: Skype UWP Preview app adds group features

Today, we’ve updated the Skype UWP Preview app via the store on Insider versions of Windows 10. With it, Windows Insiders* can create and send group messages, as well as make group audio and video calls. In the latest experience, you can see up to four video images at once, which comes in handy when you want to witness everyone’s reaction to your latest and greatest jokes or chat about the season finale of your favorite show.

You can also chat with your group and keep the conversation going via group instant messaging.

Have favorite groups? In this release, you can also mark any person or group as a favorite. As you can see, we’ve added lots of group features to play with. In addition, we also know that autocorrect may sometimes get ahead of you, so we’ve added the ability to edit and delete messages to manage any faux pas.

What’s next? Soon, we’ll be releasing the Skype UWP Preview app to your mobile devices. You may also have noticed that we removed the Skype integration in the Messaging app on Windows 10 Mobile to streamline and simplify your experience.

The mobile release of the Skype UWP Preview app will bring you features you’ve asked for—like group calling and more—while leveraging the benefits of the Skype integration into Windows 10 you previously experienced, like a single view of your SMS and Skype conversations. This way you get the best Skype experience possible and you can take it across your Windows devices.

Keep an eye out for the mobile version of the Skype UWP Preview app. In the meantime, you can use the existing Skype for Windows Phone app available in the Windows Store.

What is App Connector...?

Thank you ,

I am just a regular PC user, not a developer.
Web, Skype, FB chat, some light gaming, some light photo/video editing.
Can you give a simple example of how you think this App Connector impacts my PC activity.....?

Right, you might not be a developer but at some point you might use a 3rd party UWP App.

The UWP Skype App needs access to your camera and your microphone ... while not a 3rd party App, Skype might not have access to those without App Connector - not sure, just an example.

The Google App (Ok Google) needs to access your microphone.

Instead of everyone writing their own access, getting permissions, etc, their Apps ask the App Connector to service their requests.

This approach is nothing new to Android users, when an Android App gets installed, it lists the permissions it requires. You either accept them or cancel the install. Most people accept and install the App. MS might be trying to get past that one install step by granting the permissions to the App Connector. The permissions are listed on the App page in the Store - nothing nefarious, just eliminating a step.

Keep in mind - this is all conjecture on my part - no hard evidence did I find *Wink
