Windows 10: Update on Project xCloud Preview for Western Europe

Bringing the Project xCloud preview to gamers across Western Europe is a top priority for us. We know gaming is an important way for people to remain connected, particularly during these times of social distancing, but we also recognize how internet bandwidth has been impacted with strain on regional networks as large volumes of people responsibly stay home and go online.

It has been said too many times, but itâs true we are living in unprecedented times due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Here at Xbox, we look to our products to bring joy and connection at all times and particularly during these weeks and months when weâre asked to stay at home. We know weâre in this together and the support we can provide one another is of critical importance now more than ever.

Phil Spencer has talked often about what he sees as the unique power of games to bring people together, to entertain, to inspire and connect. We all believe that in our current circumstances thatâs even more true, and we hope that the freedom to discover and play with Project xCloud brings even more joy and connection.

Project xCloud, which has continued to grow and evolve since preview started last year, is our game-streaming technology allowing players to play console games from the cloud on an Android phone or tablet. As we promised at X019 in November, weâve had our sights set on expanding the Project xCloud preview this year to more countries.

With that in mind, we continue to evaluate the COVID-19 situation and will begin rolling out the Project xCloud preview across 11 Western European countries when we are confident it is sensible to do so. We will take a measured approach to help conserve internet access, beginning the preview in each market with a limited number of people and adding more participants over time.

Microsoft Project xCloud Limited iOS TestFlight Preview Begins Today

Ever since we launched the Project xCloud preview last year, we’ve continued to field requests for iOS support (I’ve seen your tweets). We’ve been testing an iOS client internally, and today, we’re taking the next step by making the Project xCloud preview available for iOS users through the TestFlight program.

To comply with App Store policies, the preview experience on iOS may look and feel different for those who have been testing on Android. Key differences and things to know:

The iOS TestFlight preview is only available in the US, UK, and Canada at this time.

Unlike the Xbox Game Streaming (Preview) app on Android, this iOS TestFlight preview is for Project xCloud only and does not include Xbox Console Streaming (Preview) at this time.

Due to App Store policy, the iOS TestFlight preview will begin with one game, “Halo: The Master Chief Collection.”

As is standard with iOS TestFlight builds, we’re starting with a very limited preview audience. Up to 10,000 testers will be invited into the preview, but we anticipate that demand will exceed our capacity and we will be unable to accommodate all applicants. We’ll distribute invitations to participate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Because of how iOS TestFlight works, those who are accepted into the iOS TestFlight preview may not necessarily participate for the full duration of the preview. As noted earlier, there are limited spaces available, so for testing purposes we may need to cycle through registrants in order to best utilize the available testing audience. This also means that even if you miss out on the initial allocation, you might receive an invitation to participate later in the preview!

In order to participate in the Project xCloud limited iOS TestFlight preview, here are the technical requirements:

A Microsoft account (MSA) associated with your Xbox gamertag.

An iPhone or iPad running iOS 13.0 or greater and also Bluetooth version 4.0.

A Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One Wireless Controller. Please refer to this support article if you are unsure if your Xbox One controller supports Bluetooth.

Access to a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection that supports 10Mbps-down bandwidth, similar to streaming video. If you are using Wi-Fi, we recommend using a 5Ghz connection.

Optional but recommended: a third-party controller mount for phone-based gamers, available at 11 Street and other retailers.

Here’s how you can register to participate in the Project xCloud limited iOS TestFlight preview:

For those iOS users already registered in the Android preview.

Open the Project xCloud registration link

Update your registration for the Project xCloud (Preview) and indicate you are an iOS user through the “Mobile Device Make” dropdown menu

By updating your registration to iOS you are requesting access to Project xCloud TestFlight preview. This does not impact your Android registration. You can still play on your Android devices

If there are still available spots for testers, you will receive an email from TestFlight for Xbox Game Streaming (Preview)

Open this mail from your iOS device, it contains a link to download TestFlight to your iOS device

Follow the TestFlight installation steps

From the TestFlight app, install the Xbox Game Streaming (Preview) app

Sign-in to the Xbox Game Streaming (Preview) app with your MSA

Have fun and give feedback!

For those iOS users not already registered in the Android preview.

Open the Project xCloud registration link

Register for the Project xCloud (Preview) and indicate you are an iOS user through the “Mobile Device Make” dropdown menu

By selecting iOS you are requesting access to Project xCloud TestFlight preview.

If there are still available spots for testers, you will receive an email from TestFlight for Xbox Game Streaming (Preview)

Open this mail from your iOS device, it contains a link to download TestFlight to your iOS device

X019: Microsoft expanding Project xCloud

Today we crossed our one-month milestone for the Project xCloud preview. A huge thank you to participants in Korea, UK, & US for the incredibly valuable insights that help us shape the cloud gaming experience. We’ve loved hearing anecdotes about how Project xCloud has enabled you to play Xbox games on your phone or tablet in all sorts of unique places.

When we announced the Project xCloud preview back in September, we were just getting started and intended on bringing you more games, new features, and opportunities for even more players to join. Today, we are sharing more details on what you can expect now and in the future.

More Games: 50+ titles available in the Preview

Content is key for a great game streaming experience. With nearly two decades in the console space, we have developed strong relationships with creative partners across the industry who produce a wide variety of games. We also have 17 first-party studios continuing to create amazing games. It’s our fundamental belief that this content is available for gamers to play when and how they choose.

We’re excited to say that we’re adding more than 50 new titles from over 25 of our valued partners. Games such as “Madden NFL 20”, “Devil May Cry 5,” and “Tekken 7” are now in the Preview library. Check out the full list of titles here. This is another step in the journey, and we will continue to add more games over time.

More Ways to Play: Expanding device & input types

Mobile phones provide a fantastic on-the-go gaming experience, but our goal is to continue to provide people with even more ways to play. Next year, we’ll bring Project xCloud to Windows PCs, and are collaborating with a broad set of partners to make game streaming available on other devices as well.

Enabling people to play games on the device of their choice goes beyond a phone or tablet, it extends into how you control the game. In addition to using an Xbox One wireless controller, we’ll expand support to more Bluetooth controllers beginning next year, including the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller and game pads from Razer.

More Opportunities for Players around the World to get involved

Since beginning the preview, we’ve been sending out waves of invites to registered gamers, and today, we’re sending out additional invites so more people can experience Project xCloud. We will continue inviting more and more players over the course of the preview, so if you have not already registered, you can sign up here.

We will also bring Project xCloud Preview to more markets beginning in 2020, such as Canada, India, Japan, and Western Europe. Expanding to additional markets over time is an important step in our journey to delight the 2 billion gamers in the world. We’ll have more details to share soon on when and how to register.
