USB ports not recognised after forced Windows 10 update

Judging by the number of questions on here, this is an INCREDIBLY common problem, going back YEARS. How is this still happening?

My computer recenty performed an unrequested update to Windows 10. Now my USB ports no longer work. Upon turning on the computer, they power up the connected devices mouse and keyboard but well before the desktop is shown, the devices power off and they are totally unusable.

All the ridiculous suggestions of “Go to Device Manager”, etc. are totally pointless since neither my keyboard nor my mouse work and, therefore, I have NO control over the PC. I don’t even have any other option other than USB to attach them - I don’t have the older style inputs in the back of my PC.

I’m genuinely astounded that this remains a problem. There are countless posts, citing this issue over 4 years ago. How are updates STILL causing this?

Given that I have no control over my computer at all, what do I do. And no, this isn’t a hardware issue - everything was working perfectly until the update messed it up, as it seems were MANY other peoples’.

    :)

Click next/OK as required to complete installation. Repeat the steps for all Intel USB devices. Finally click on each USB root device and press DEL to delete it, reply YES when asked. After deleting all USB root devices restart the computer.

I hope this is detailed enough...

  3. USB ports no longer working afetr Windows 10 Nov Update

Following reboot after the Windows 10 Nov update all USB ports have stopped working.

All USB ports are powered but do not recognise any connected devices (wireless mouse, wired mouse, external HD, USB memory stick).

    Do you have any suggestions?

USB ports not working in Windows 10

    Hello ruthives,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To address your concern, kindly help us with the below questions.

    1. What is the make and model of the computer?
    2. Do you read any error message when you connect the device to the USB port?
    3. Are you facing this issue with any particular USB port or with all the USB ports?
    4. Since when are you facing this issue?

Your device is kept up to date with the latest features by automatically installing the updates in Windows 10. To narrow down the issue, let's go ahead and follow the below methods and see if it helps.

Method 1: I would suggest you to follow the steps to diagnose and repair the USB ports from the article -

Automatically diagnose and fix Windows USB problems.

    Method 2: Update USB controllers.

    • Right click on the Start menu and select Device Manager from the list.
    • Narrow down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and update all the USB drivers.
    • To update the drivers, right click on the each driver and select Update driver.
    • If that doesn't resolve the issue, I would suggest you to uninstall all the USB drivers from the device manager.
    • Reboot the PC and it will automatically pick for the latest drivers for your PC.

If the issue persists, download and install the latest USB drivers available for your PC build from the
manufacturer's website and see if it works.

    Hope it helps.
