Automatic Repair, SFC and DISM Problem ...

    Hi Everyone,

This is the first time I have posted here. Here goes.

After a power surge when coming out of hibernation windows crashed. Windows 10 Pro x64 then went into automatic repair which fails to diagnose a problem and so enters a loop. Where it is not possible to go into safe mode for all of the possibilities. Discovered an issue with the 1909 build of windows after this incident; it contains some corrupt files via other pc's also on the same build of windows 10 which is most likely the store that only DISM can repair and then SFC can have a go at its' repair. However on the windows 10 pro x64 pc this is not now possible and both these fail as remedies via command prompt even when these are run from a DVD booting WinRE. In this scenario windows is divided over two drives, the c: which has system32 and the rest with all other files on e: - there is a <JUNCTION> link between e: and c: for the user folder. e: is a ramdisk generated by windows recovery and a problem in itself. Please note it is not possible to get logs e:\recovery\windowsRE\winre.wim\system32\logfiles\srt\srttrail.txt as it/they do not exist and system32 is minimal whilst housed on c:, well it is possible for the DISM logs only when taken from x:. I have done the following troubleshooting to get windows up and running with no success:

    1 BOOTREC

    /fixmbr - repairs.

    /rebuildbcd - rebuilds.

    /fixboot - access denied.

    2 CHKDSK

If dismounted works fine locating no errors. This closed a process, amd64_....., which was probably in WinSxS.

No disk errors at all via chkdsk, and this had only been checked and passed positively days before.

3 SFC From recovery off hard disk and via DVD so windows repair offline

Windows Resource Protection cannot perform required operation.

4 DISM From recovery off hard disk and via DVD offline - tried from e: and then c:

Tried a number of combinations. However for anything online the response is does not support servicing WinPE with /online.

For offline usual errors are 2, 3, 50, 1639 with the best I can get as, does not support this request but also gets unable to access image.

Tried Revertpendingactions - same problems ...

Tried mounting a wim point and using scratchdir.

    Least problem options:

    a DISM /image:e:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth /source:wim:x:\sources\install.wim:1

Er 3 ... does not support

    b DISM /Online /cleanup-image /restorehealth /source:f:\test\mount\windows !!!!

Er 50 does not support winpe - nothing new here.

    c DISM /image:e:\ /scratchdir:e:\tmp /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Er 3 the request is not support

    d DISM /mount-image /imagefile:x:\sources\install.wim /index:1 /mountdir:c:\mount

    Er 2 Cannot find file.

Another error is to do with not possible on a windows vista or earlier, if this is not so check the SSShim.DLL file is present. This file exists in system32 not present on c: and in winsxs on e: where it is present.

    5 BCDEDIT

    Bcdedit /enum all

    Windows Boot Manager - partition=c:

Windows Boot Loader 1 - partition=e: and then listed next as ramdisk=[E:] for Windows Boot Loader 2 entry

Windows Boot Loader 3 - ramdisk=[\Device\HarddiskVolume4]\Recovery\.....Winre.wim - the recovery partition left by the OEM, but had performed a clean installation as well when updating to new versions of windows.

    6 Reset Your PC / ...

    i I tried a reset, but:

"There was a problem resetting your pc."

And, this is stated at every attempt.

So this is not possible either. I have used an elevated command prompt to copy / backup new important files from the hard disk in the event....

It may be worth adding I also tried to copy the system32 folder from c: to e: with xcopy and robocopy. Even though copied is stated, nothing actually moves.

In the past I did perform a clean / custom installation. But this time I wanted to see if these issues are solvable which would help for future problems. Particularly with c: and e: - this does not help DISM repair under this situation and where system32 should have the second ssshim.dll file in.

ii Uninstall The Latest Quality Update

We ran into a problem and won't be able to uninstall the lastest quality update of windows

Please note I did not have a problem with anylastest quality update or any update at all.

iii Uninstall The Lastest Feature Update

We ran into a problem and won't be able to uninstall the latest feature update of windows. Try resetting your pc instead.

Please note I did not have a problem with any lastest feature update at all etc.

Does anybody know how to get windows repaired and booting for this scenario, starting with DISM particularly for winPE, offline and with c: and e: drives? Before I just re-installed windows with a clean installation - experienced similar problem once before. But will only do this if I really have to.

I do have some DISM logs from X: but they are not that informative. Did mention e:\ was not a wim mount point.

Any ideas other than wipe away the problem which a custom and clean installation, which from the start have been a distinct outcome?

    All the best. :

    :)

Can't get SFC and DISM to work anymore on Win10

Ok, can someone help me out because this crap is starting to piss me off. There was once a time when you could simply run SFC and DISM to check Windows files integrity and if there were any problems found with the local files, Windows repaired it automatically. The reason why I want to run this is because I'm getting stupendously huge amount of errors and warnings in Event Viewer, but I don't want to run refresh because it'll mess up tons of apps.

    Commands I used:
    sfc /scannow
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Fast forward few years and we now have glorious Windows 10. Trying to run the same tools, they find errors but stubbornly refuse to fix ANYTHING. What's the god damn point of it then?

Sfc finds issues but can't repair them and DISM constantly bitches how it can't find the source. All this used to work directly in Windows 7, but in Win 10, nothing. This was one of the best features to get OS back in good state and they go and ruin it. Because Microsoft!

    I've checked this thread:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.co...sfc-failed-to-repair?forum=win10itprohardware

Nothing worked. And they keep mentioning install.wim where my Windows image downloaded from Microsoft itself! only carries install.esd which I can't seem to use with anything.

    I've also tried this tool:
    CodePlex Archive

Which again wants .wim file and refuses to work with esd.

How to get damn DISM to work?

Thx guys, I'll compress this data into a blog post. For all the so called guides I've read, not a single one mentioned it has to be WIM file (some listed even ESD which clearly doesn't work) or that certain ISO images don't work with DISM.

After I've done DISM thingie, SFC also managed to repair stuff. Which is what I've needed here.

Automatic Repair, SFC and DISM Problem ...

How to get damn DISM to work?

you need to run DISM first before running SFC
SFC query's the local component stores to make repairs
DISM is targeted for rebuilding the component stores and a offline image the 'live' section is still handled by SFC in some cases
except on windows 8.1 and up because they changed it
but only for certain files and only if x part of the store is corrupt
    so yea pretty confusing eh
