Windows 10: Surface Pro 4 Screen Crashing

Hi,


I purchased a Surface Pro 4 a few years ago, I can't remember exactly when, but I do know that it's out of warranty now.


When I'm on it for a while not a long time, maybe an hour minimum, the monitor acts weird.

The lights behind the screen start to flash weirdly, & the window appears to freeze.


Then if I close the application I'm on, it can stay like below for a while:





As you can see I'm on the desktop, but the app I was on previously is still on the screen somewhat.


If I leave this for a while, the screen will go back to normal for a short while, before the same thing happens again.


When I shut down the laptop, & start up tomorrow, it will be fine for a short while again, before the same thing happens.


I'd just like to know if this is happening because the laptop is a few years old? Am I putting too much strain on it? I have it connected to a seperate monitor also through a HDMI, but I'd have thought it could manage that.


Is it just a matter of wear-and-tear?


If so, I would need to look into getting a replacement.


I do a lot of software development, so I'll be using apps like VS Code, etc. so the new device would have to be suitable for development.


Just wondering what would be the best alternative to the Surface Pro, as I don't want a device where the screen does this to me again?

The main causes observed so far are driver issues, so I suggest you to install and update all the drivers and see if it helps.

Download drivers and firmware for Surface

I would also suggest you to install all Windows update and check.

Follow the steps:

1. On the search bar type “Settings”.

2. Click on “Update and Security”.

3. Click on “Check for Updates”.

4. Read and accept the license terms, and then tap or click Finish if the update requires it.
