Windows 10: Twice Disk space consumed on copy

In the last few days maybe weeks I'm experiencing the following phenomenon:

On a disk formatted to NTFS and set to be compressed I did not try it on uncompressed disks,

Copying any file will reduce disk space available by twice the file size.

On restart, this space appears again, but this is a real problem.

I tried copying some files from one disk to another, using windows explorer.

The size of the files was a bit more than half of the available space on the target disk,

the copy failed due to insufficient disk space on target disk.

After restart, I was able to complete the copy.

Killing explorer and restarting it did not resolve the issue,

only a full restart.


In my opinion this is a real problem.


I tried it on several different machines,

with the same behavior observed.

On all machines, available disk space was reduced by twice the size of the files being copied

All machines were checked to be up-to-date with all updates.

Something is consuming up all my disk space...

Unnecessary files may consume all your disk space. To help you resolve your concern, kindly follow these steps:

• Delete unnecessary files.
• Delete the data in the Recycle Bin.
• Perform a clean boot. It helps eliminate software conflicts. You may refer to this

• Add more storage by using external drives and OneDrive.

Disk or memory space

Even though no programs or applications are running, some background services can show memory usage and disk usage. You may check which particular program is using the memory. Refer to these steps:



a) Press Windows key + X, select task manager.

b) Click on the ‘processes’ tab and it will show you show you a list of programs and services running and their corresponding memory usage and disk usage.

c) Check if any of the item listed is consuming more memory or disk usage than normal.

One of the methods to solve the problem is to increase the virtual memory. Make it equivalent to your RAM size for the initial size and twice of the initial size in maximum size and make sure you have the same amount of free space in your hard drive in each
drive.

If the issue persists you can place the computer in a
Clean Boot and check.

Taking into consideration that the free space is shrinking fast, it is possible that your system is creating restore points. To
delete restore points except for the recent one, simply follow the steps below:

• From the Cortana search box, type Disk Cleanup and click on the first result.
• Once the Disk Cleanup window appears, select the
  More Options tab.
• Under the System Restore and Shadow Copies column, click on the
  Clean up... button.

Once done with the steps, see if your disk space has expanded.
