  1. Upgrading - need to reinstall windows with new motherboard?

I'm upgrading from a long overdue build from college. I'll be replacing the motherboard and have a full retail windows 10, 64 pro key. Am I going to need to reinstall windows, or can I just drop in the parts and boot up (and install drivers/utilities)?

    For the curious:

    Core2 Quad q9550 @3.68GHz

    4GB ddr2 OC to "1040"/520MHz cl5

    Gigabyte ep45-ud3l

Keeping the Gtx770 video card I have

    Going to:

    Asus TUF X299 mark2

    Core i5 7640X (unlocked, 4.0Ghz base)

    16GB ddr4 "4000" pc4-32000 cl19 rated

Have a nvme SSD coming too, so I will probably move my windows install to there anyway, but would rather get it all sorted and then clone it.

  2. Windows 10 and upgrading motherboard

    Hi,

Thank you for bringing up your query on Microsoft Community.

The only hardware changes that can negatively impact activation status once you upgrade to free version are the changes to the:

    • CPU
    • TPM
    • Motherboard replacement
The following changes are examples of hardware changes that will NOT impact the activation status:

    • HDD/SSD
    • Video card
    • Adding extra memory
Let us follow the steps suggested by Andre Da Costa (replied

How to upgrade motherboard and CPU without reinstalling Windows 10?

I would like to upgrade the motherboard and CPU of my computer, which runs Windows 10. However, I would prefer to avoid reinstalling the operating system. The OS is installed to an M.2 NVMe drive on an AM3+ socket motherboard, and I will be upgrading to
    an AM4 socket motherboard.

    • Is there any procedure I have to perform to prepare the computer for the new motherboard? Should I uninstall any drivers or motherboard-specific software in advance?
    • How do I ensure that my license key is accepted by the new board? I made a digital purchase of Windows 10 Pro from the Microsoft store for this computer, and want to make sure the license transfers to the new board when I upgrade.
    • Are there any caveats to the process, things I should watch out for, or possible performance issues that may be caused by old configuration files or leftover drivers?

    All help is greatly appreciated.

Upgrading - need to reinstall windows with new motherboard?

    Reinstall Windows?

You don't need to reinstall windows. Go to the device manager and remove uninstall the processor and motherboard drivers listed. When you start the system back up you should be able to re-install the new ones. I just changed my mobo/processor Friday, everything is fine.

BTW I have seen some reviews that state practically no difference in using more than 2gb of ram.
