    Regedit causing webcam permissions issues?

Hi, I was just wondering if its possible that editing an item using the registry editor might cause some issues with websites getting permission to use my camera?

I was trying to start a video interview on LaunchPad recruits and performed the test they provide to check my camera and everything worked, which it did so I went to try and sort out my windows search bar and come back to the interview.

I used regedit to allow my windows search bar to show me web results as well as local results. I navigated to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search in the regedit and added BingSearchEnable to the list and set the value to 1, which enabled Bing in the windows search bar.

However after doing this I tried to relaunch the launchpad recruits web application only for it to throw up an error message because my camera wasn't working. I have a feeling it is something to do with LaunchPad because the camera works fine on Discord and Webcamtests.com but I don't know enough to say for sure, so to reiterate: Can using Regedit mess up my web camera like this?

    :)

  2. webcam issue

    Hi,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you are facing. I will certainly help you with this.

The information which you have provided is not enough for us to determine the issue. Please provide us more information.

    • What exact error message do you receive while using Webcam?
    • Does this issue persist while using specific app/program or does it persist with all app using Webcam?

    Method 1:

I suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices
troubleshooter and check if it helps.

    • Type troubleshooting in the search bar.
    • Select Troubleshooting.
    • Select View all on the top left corner.
    • Click on Hardware and Devices.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.
    • Check if issue persists.

    Method 2:

If issue persist, I suggest you to try installing Webcam drivers in compatibility mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows. Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check
    if that helps.

    • Download the Webcam drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
    • Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘Properties’.
    • Click on the ‘Compatibility’ tab and check the box
‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’
and select Windows 8/8.1 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
Hope this information is helpful. Do reply if you need further assistance, we will be happy to help you.

    Thank you.

  3. Permission issues

    Hi,

    Sorry for the delayed reply.

This may be caused by incorrect permissions on the files.

You can fix this using these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

  4. Regedit causing webcam permissions issues?

    No permissions

    Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.
