  1. Windows 10 explorer ? keeps causing lag spikes

    Hi all,

I have a 5-ish year old ASUS TP300 notebook laptop with Windows 10 on it. For a while now I've been having an issue where my CPU usage jumps from 50% use again, ish nominal to 100% use spikes every 10 seconds or so. I'm not a tech genius by any means but I have a suspicion it's coming from Windows explorer, as whenever I try and scroll through files it resets me to the top of the list, as if I refreshed the window. Equally, having an explorer window open for any extended period of time causes explorer to crash and need restarting, after which it's normally fine although the CPU spikes persist.

This is somewhat infuriating, especially when trying to rename files as whenever I type the new name in in explorer, it resets as if I'd pressed ESC. It also means I can't have many programmes open at once as it struggles to keep up - it seems to struggle with Powerpoint especially.

Is this something that can be fixed? I've seen a few threads on Windows explorer crashing every so often but mine only crashes when the window has been open for a while, and AFAIK I haven't seen anything on the CPU spikes. I know it's an old laptop but I'm not currently in a position to be able to buy a new one, or even a hard drive to backup my files to be able to reset Windows.

    Hope someone can help!

    :)

    Random lag spikes

    Hi,

We would like to know more about your lag issue:

    • What browser are you using when you experience a lag?
    • Does the lag occur in a particular game?

In the meantime, we suggest you run the System Maintenance troubleshooter. Here are the steps:

    • Press Windows Key + X.
    • Click on Control Panel.
    • Select Troubleshooting.
    • On the left pane, click on View All.
    • Click on System Maintenance to run the troubleshooter.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Windows 10 explorer ? keeps causing lag spikes

Lag spike causes lag in a game

So the story is very simple, from time to time I have a huge "lag" in the game and it lasts for like 1 second. This is very annoying. I've done some investigating and it turns out that during the lag, there's a huge spike on a disk usage caused by the same game. Is there any way to avoid the lag? Or is it just a game issue? I send an image showing performance analysis.
