Windows 10: Windows 10 version 2004 introduces new security features

On May 27, 2020, Microsoft started rolling out Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004) to mainstream consumers and anyone can check for updates in Windows Update page to see if their PC is ready.

There are plenty of new features, improvements and minor fixes in Windows 10’s May 2020 Update. It includes better things like improved Bluetooth pairing for Surface products, Virtual Desktop renaming, faster performance, and new security features.

With Windows 10 version 2004, Microsoft is introducing support for Wi-Fi 6, Reputation-based Protection and Windows Hello in Safe mode.

Reputation-based Protection


Windows 10 May 2020 Update adds a new feature called “Reputation-based Protection” to Windows Security app, which is the built-in security app in windows 10. The Reputation-based Protection feature will allow users to block potentially unwanted applications that are bundled in with some apps (mostly freeware) that you download from random websites.

The feature blocks PUAs, which refers to software that has been installed by tricking the user. PUAs could also change the search engine of your web browser or install unwanted extensions if you install them accidentally.

May 2020 Update comes with Reputation-based Protection tool to block PUAs from installing on your computer. If an unwanted app tries to install itself, it will be blocked and Windows Defender will display a notification explaining what had happened.

You can manually enable PUA protection in Windows 10 by following these steps:

• Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security.
• Click on “App & browser control”.
• Select “Reputation-based protection” settings.
  
• Enable all three options.

Once enabled, Windows Defender will start blocking unwanted apps and extensions.

Wi-Fi 6 and WPA3


Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 version 2004 introduces support for Wi-Fi 6 if you have a compatible router and wireless adapter.

Wi-Fi 6 comes with significant performance and security improvements.

If you have a single Wi-Fi 6 PC connected to a Wi-Fi 6 router, the connection won’t be substantially faster than the predecessor, but when you add multiple devices to the network, more potential speed will reach each device.

Additionally, Wi-Fi 6 introduces WPA3 encryption that would generate a live password with every data transmission and provide protection against a series of attacks.

Windows Hello


Windows 10 version 2004 comes with Windows Hello support in Safe mode. Once enabled, Windows Hello will show up for your device when it is booted up in Safe mode.

In this release, Passwordless sign-in for Microsoft accounts have also been made easier and you can now use Windows Hello when logging into your Microsoft accounts instead of the password.

Both new features work only on devices that support Windows Hello.

"Attestation" A new feature coming to Windows Defender in Windows 10

Tech Republic - Upcoming Windows Defender feature will tell you when security fails

This seems very promising. Microsoft is in the unique position to know what Windows should look like, even before Windows Update pushes out new changes. As long as MS can properly sync WD with WU changes AND this new features does not make any "noticeable" hit on system performance/resources, all without any false positives, this should be a big step forward for consumer security, and a blow to the bad guys - always a good thing.

Of course, there will likely be some hiccups the Windows/Microsoft/Windows Defender bashers will surely pounce on - regardless how extensive the Beta process is. But hopefully open and unbiased minds will prevail. After all, the goal is to stop the bad guys and if this gets us closer to that, that's a very good thing.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
