Recovery from USB fails - new SSD

I have an HP DV7 Envy laptop, which originally came with Windows 8, and upgraded to Windows 10. In December 2019, I created a USB Recovery drive from that installation, no hitches in creating the USB recovery. In March, the HDD showed significant signs of imminent failure. The machine will boot up and Windows runs, but it's unreliable with apps getting hung up and other errors. So I purchased a new SSD to replace the old HDD which has now been removed from the laptop.

Today I installed the new SSD and booted it up from the USB and started the recovery process to reinstall Win10, however, this has now failed 3 times, twice it got to 32%, then just gave me the 'failed' message - I have no idea why.

It could be my only option now is a fresh install of Win10, but when I went to download the ISO, the ONLY version available is the May 2020 update, which clearly has a LOT of issues. Since this laptop is more than 5 years old, I expect the issues that have been documented with this update will affect this machine 1909 update caused enough issues!.

    Questions:

1 Is there any solution to the failed Recovery issue? I would prefer to get it back this way, if it's at all possible.

    If there's no solution, then:

2 Is there any way to get an ISO of the previous version, BEFORE the terribly buggy May 2020 2004 update? No point in installing something that's going to jack up my computer from the get-go.

To complicate matters, I do NOT have access to another Win10 computer that would allow me to use the Media Creation Tool to put it on a USB. My only other machine is an older, but functional, Vista yeah, I know machine.

I've pretty much been without my primary laptop now for almost 3 months, I have to get it working.

    Thanks.

    :)

Windows 10 recovery USB - which size???

Not even that. What creating a recovery drive does (if you select 'include system files') is to construct the files required to clean install Windows. If this is made on an OEM install these file will include the OEM custom apps and drivers - effectively a 'factory reset' drive. It is extracting an install image from your existing system files that takes the time.

The steps in making a recovery drive are shown in this tutorial...

Create Recovery Drive in Windows 10 | Tutorials

    • first you choose whether or not to include system files (step 5 in tutorial)
    • next the recovery drive files are constructed (this can take a long time if you include system files)
    • only after that is complete will you be asked which usb to use (step 6 in tutorial). At this point you will be told how large a usb you need.

Without system files 512 Mb is sufficient. Including system files it will be just over 4GB.

At which step did you get the error? If you were not asked which usb to use then it was the construction of the system files that failed, nothing to do with what usb you had.

How to reformat USB Recovery Drive

Part of the commands and results were missing from the image.

Open adminstrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    diskpart
    list disk
    select disk #
(replace # with the disk number for the flash drive)
    attributes disk clear readonly
    exit

If the above steps work then you are set.
