  1. Computer hacked - Porn got into my OneDrive folders

    Hi. I'm hoping someone can offer advice. I have Windows 10 Pro on my home pc I mainly use for online courses. I discovered that some porn got into my synced folders and uploaded to OneDrive. Please understand this was not intentional. I first noticed this a couple days ago I noticed some image files I didn't recognize were being synced. Judging by the filenames they didn't appear to be legal. I didn't look at any of them and tried to stop it by pausing syncing, shutting down OneDrive and doing a search on my computer for the filenames I noticed. I wasn't able to find anything so I'm guessing that OneDrive already deleted them. I tried using the online web client to delete them from the site, but received a notification that my account was locked due to a violation of their TOS with a contact form where I could submit to have my account reactivated.

    Rather than waste time scanning my computer again, I backed up my important data to an external drive, shut my computer down, waited a minute or two, then booted on my Windows 10 Pro install USB Stick, deleted of the partitions on my drives then did a clean Windows install.

    After that, I went back and filled out the contact form explaining what happened. After submission, I received a message saying that they are receiving a high volume of submissions and they normally respond in 24 hours.

    ==== A bit more background ====
    While I have looked at some adult sites online occasionally, they have been legal age related. Going back a couple years, while visiting some sites, I would get notifications Norton 360 saying that it was blocking malicious hacking attempts.
    I found a search engine for adult sites. Some time in the last year or so, after clicking on one of the links, my screen flickered and saw a couple quick popups that looked like command terminal windows. After that, everything seemed fine. I ran some free online malware scan tools such as Trendmicro's Housecall which found some cookies and some adware. Sometime after that, my family and I, we started getting a lot of spam and telemarketer calls on a daily basis. I had to register my home number with the Nomorobo spam call blocker. Some still slip through, but it's not as bad as it was.

    My family (mom, 79 and sister, 44) and I have been going through a life hardship situation since early 2017 after I loss my job, along with many other issues that I would rather not go into.

    I have reached out to a legal advice site (justanswer[dot]com), but have not heard back from them either.

    I'm really concerned and don't know how to resolve this. Is there anything else I can do to mitigate this becoming a legal issue?

    :)

  2. Computer hacked - Porn got into my OneDrive folders

    It's hard to know. If you want to know what I would have done I would have taken a full image of the entire drive and somehow got it onto a storage device ie external hard drive or something similiar. That way you have an exact replica of the whole drive should it be needed in the future for whatever reason. Why? To cover your back. You've just been hacked, right? This person planted porn on your computer that you should was sketchy followed by uploading it to your OneDrive account. The fact that it's porn is bad enough. It's not even a stupid PDF file or a hate letter or something. Even a text document trolling me would be acceptable given the fact that I'd been hacked. But porn? Put on my computer without my consent? Red flag. Anything sexual and involved with criminal activity like hacking is never a good thing.

    Just Google or DuckDuckGo "blackmail hacking porn".
    I'm working on a worst case scenario but I think that's the best way to go about things like this. Being hacked requires a mindset like that anyway because it's like getting your car broken into, stolen and dumped somewhere. You don't attempt to drive a burnt out wreck around avoiding the fact that your car is now pretty much screwed.

    I can't honestly see this stemming from PH. I'm guessing by PH you mean Pornhub. If so that is by far the safest site to visit. It's so popular and mainstream now that they couldn't possibly conduct suspicious activity. They are the YouTube for porn. So it's likely to have come from somewhere else, preferably another site that is far more nefarious. And when I say nefarious the actual content might not be but the owners, that's another topic. Like I said right at the start, the online porn world has a light side and a dark side. It doesn't take much to navigate to dark side. So like I said, be careful. Stick to the vanilla websites of this nature and if you're going to go deeper be prepared to meet less well regulated and potentially darker websites. With darker websites come the significant risks aforementioned.

    Good luck!

    I don't understand how taking an image of the drive would help me. The content, that I don't want any part of, would still be in my possession. When it comes to backing up data, I haven't had a lot of success unless it was burned to a DVD and even that, I didn't do often enough.

    Speaking of car break-ins, I know what you mean. I've had that happen to me too and I felt violated. But that was something tangible. Now, I feel even more violated.

    As far as Pornhub, I was using that as an example of where I was getting the Norton notifications that the malicious action or atempt was blocked. Duckduckgo is how I found the adult content search engines and lists of other adult content sites, both main stream and others that were not so much. The latter had various quirks about them kind of like having to jump though hoops to get to the actual content. Some had popups that came up in little boxes with no content or as windows behind the site window with other adult content or no content at all.
