Windows 10: How do I transfer upgraded Windows 10 Key to a New Hard Drive in the same Laptop?

On 24/05/2020, My hp Pavilion dv6 laptop crashed & showed blue screen which shows only the sad smiley face, this blue screen occurred repeatedly on restarting and auto-repair did not fix the problem; I suspected that the blue screen problem was caused by the "May 2020 update" and tried but failed to uninstall the recent update via the blue screen options. Then I tried to restore the computer to an earlier restore point but it showed a message it couldn't complete restoration. Then I tried reset to the factory state 1 Keep my files & 2 Remove everything; both did not start citing "an error has occurred". I tried using my Recovery Discs to reinstall Windows 7 the one that came with the laptop, it completed installation and on auto-restarting Windows, the computer shut down after either 2-4 minutes or 10-15 minutes. On manually restarting the computer, it showed message "Windows Error Recovery" with options such as "Safe Mode"...... "Start Windows normally". On Safe Mode, it showed "Windows can't complete setup, so restart the Windows"; on starting Windows normally, computer shut down after few minutes.


Please note the laptop came with "Windows 7 Home" and I upgraded to "Windows 10 Home" when the free upgrade was available.


I tried the HP diagnostic tool, few times while running the test for the Hard Disc the computer shut down; tried few times and computer got shut down; but few hours ago, the test successfully completed and showed "No Error" message. Other tests were completed successfully without incident.


But, still, Windows starts with the animation runs for few minutes then the laptop shuts downnow, it is Windows 7;

I wonder whether it is due to some Hard Disc problem.


In this case I need to replace the Hard Disc with a new one; Can you please let me know whether I can transfer the Windows Key to the New Hard Disc, if so, how?

To replace a hard drive on a laptop is a little more troublesome than a desktop. 1st as most people here suggest you will need some sort of a backup disk just in case. Also be sure when buying the new Hard Disk is compatible with your model. And i would strongly suggest you install a new system and start from scratch because there are far too many problems that can occur when transferring system files.

If you ghost the OS from disk to disk with the same system it should work fine. Thing is you have to GHOST the disk, including the MBR or it won't be bootable. Any other normal laptop drive should work as long as the connections the same.



If you cannot make a backup install CD, you'll likely need to locate a windows install CD, unless you can ghost the drive. Thats pretty much your only options atm.

Yeah but it is a bit of a bummer when i have paid for a genuine copy of windows mce.
but i do have a copy of vista that i could put in the laptop but i am not too sure it will be good as it is slower on my desktop which i dual boot wwith xp. the spec is

1GB DDR RAM
40 GB RAM
