How to block the new Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 devices

Microsoft started the rollout of the new Microsoft Edge web browser that is based on Chromium via Windows Update this week. It is pushed to Windows 10 devices using Windows Update, but only if the new Edge is not installed already on the device.

The new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge web browser is seen as a big improvement by many as it uses the same core as Google Chrome; that means better web compatibility and that it is faster, that users may install Google Chrome extensions, and more.

The new browser does not replicate the full feature set of the classic Edge browser on the other hand; some organizations may want to keep on using the classic version of Microsoft Edge for a period of time.

Microsoft continues to support the classic Edge with security updates but it won't add any new features to it. It is therefore not a problem to keep the classic version of Microsoft Edge installed on a system for the time being.

Administrators may block the deployment of the Chromium-based Edge browser by adding a value to the Registry. If set correctly, Windows Update will not download and install the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser on the system.

Note: the value can only be set if the new Edge is not installed already on the device.

Here is how that is done:

    1. Tap on the Start key, type regedit.exe and hit the Enter-key to start the Registry Editor.
    2. Confirm the UAC prompt if it is displayed.
    3. Go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft.
    4. Find the key EdgeUpdate.
    5. Right-click on EdgeUpdate and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value.
    6. Name the value DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium.
    7. Double-click on the newly generated Dword and set its data value to 1.
    8. Restart the computer.

A value of 1 means that the update to the Chromium-based Edge browser is blocked. Delete the newly created Dword at a later point in time to allow the update.

Now You: Classic or new Microsoft Edge, which do you favor, and why?

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.

Forget extensions, built-in ad blocking is coming to Microsoft Edge - [UPDATE... no it's not!]

Blocking specific users from using Microsoft Edge browser

I found that doing the first 9 steps listed here did the trick. After taking ownership, I used regular NTFS permissions to deny permissions on the users I'm trying to block from using Edge.

Microsoft blocks Windows 10 April Update for Intel SSD 600p Series

Microsoft is blocking some Intel SSDs from installing the April 2018 Update after discovering an incompatibility issue that causes performance and stability issues. In short, the problem was explained by Microsoft as: “When attempting to upgrade to Window 10 April 2018 Update select devices with certain Intel SSDs may enter a UEFI screen reboot or crash repeatedly.” Microsoft says that this issue has no workaround and that those that have attempted to update Windows 10 to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update should revert back to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update version 1709.

Unfortunately, the announcement by Microsoft fails to list what specific Intel SSD models are having issues with the OS update. We contacted Intel and discovered that the Intel SSD 600p Series of client drives that was first introduced to the market in 2016 is the most popular drive that is having issues.
