CMD prompt and Task Manager window monopolize window interaction

    Hi,

For some time now the below behavior is exhibited on my Windows 10 setup.

This is becoming quite irritating and I'd love to eliminate this and have 'normal behavior'.

My system is fully patched/updated, and is currently v2004, but these symptoms were already present in v1909, which I clean installed back in dec.

System is virus and malware free and otherwise functioning normally.

Below I'll try to illustrate the actions, so please bear with me, because I can't describe the issue in 2 sentences :-

    cmd prompt / Task Manager

As soon as one of these are started, the rest of all potentially other windows on the screen become unresponsive. eg. you can't close them red X, nor minimize them, no normal gui interaction possible, until you minimize cmd or task manager window, as the case may be.

    example:

When cmd-prompt or Task Manager is not started or is minimized:

'mouse-over' icon of an open app showing in 'Taskbar' and its 'window thumbnail' appears

'mouse-over' the thumbnail and ALL other app windows if open disappear and only desktop and the 'thumbnail -app' window is shown as long as you mouse-over, but disappears when no longer 'moused-over'.

However clicking the thumbnail, will bring back ALL other app windows if open with the thumbnail app you clicked open on top.

Clicking the app icon on the taskbar will either show that app or minimize it to the taskbar.

This is afaik 'normal' gui interaction behavior, or at least it's how I'v always experienced it.

Now open cmd prompt or Task Manager "always on top" not set and "Minimize on use" set
'mouse-over' icon of an open app showing in 'Taskbar' and its 'window thumbnail' appears
'mouse-over' the thumbnail and ALL other app windows** if open disappear and only the 'thumbnail -app' window is shown as long as you mouse-over, but disappears when no longer 'moused-over'.

**there is an outline showing of the cmd prompt window or Task Manager window BEHIND the mouse-over app window

However clicking the thumbnail, will not bring back ALL other app windows if open with the opened thumbnail app on top

Clicking an app icon on the taskbar, or even in the thumbnail-app, nothing happens, so willnot show the app or minimize it again to taskbar.

I first have to minimize the respective cmd/task manager app through it's own window 'minimize-button', before everything becomes responsive again.

It looks like these apps cmd / Task Manager are monopolizing exclusive screen interaction and preventing other mouse interaction.

I already ran the below as admin, with the indicated result.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

You may appreciate that I'm somewhat stumped as to where this is coming from, or better still how to correct this.

Your collective thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    :)

  2. Windows 8 task manager 32 Bit?

I haven't used Windows 8 so, I don't know if this will work...

To explicitly launch 64-bit task manager, try calling it here:
    C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe

    32-bit is here:
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\taskmgr.exe

Microsoft could have easily goofed and linked to the wrong one.

windows live family safety doesn't work message in Windows 10

    Hi,

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

    • Open an Administrator CMD window. If you can’t find a way, use these steps:

      • Press CTRL+Shift+ESC to open Task Manager.

      • Click File > Run New Task

      • Make sure you have a check mark beside “Create this task with administrative privileges”

      • Type CMD

    • Type the following commands at the CMD prompt:

      dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

      sfc /scannnow

Then try to check if you find the option by right clicking on any app.

    Hope the information helps.
