This is NVIDIA smi evaluating the same card on the same machine, under Windows and Linux. A developer friend says Windows will take more than is admitted by the nvidia-smi app. Is that true?

  2. VRam reserved and unavailable with Windows 10

    Hi,

This is not exactly an issue relating to gaming, but maybe yes.

I'm using a 3D render engine (Octane) and I'm facing a VRam limitation due to Windows 10. I'm using GTX 1070 cards and from the 8Gb available on such Nvidia models, 1.4 GB are reserved by Windows and cannot be used by the rendering application.

Do you also have to face that situation when using your games ? And if so, have you find any workaround to prevent Windows from reserving a part of the VRam ?

    Thanks for your feedback

  3. Windows 10 and VRam on Nvidia GTX cards

As you pointed a compatibility issue, I asked NVidia what was their thought about that and here is their answer :

I would like to inform you that GTX 1070 is compatible with Windows 10, And we have several drivers available for the same. So there are no such compatibilities issues with Windows 10.

I made some more searches on the net and it really seems that this is a recurrent problem with Windows 10 since 2015.

So what should I do to deactivate this VRam reservation ?

Windows 10 does not let CUDA applications to use all VRAM on graphics card.

I encountered the described issue as well when I installed windows 10 in 2015. I now waited for more than a year in vain for this issue to be resolved.

    - - -

    Issue description:

I paid several thousand dollars for a workstation with multiple GPU for GPU rendering.

All the cards with 6 GB VRAM after windows 10 installation only had around 4.7 GB available to store 3D assets like geometry and textures.

It has now been more than a year and no company involved has been able to work around the issue.

If VRAM needs to be reserved then at least make it a
    fixed value
and not percentage based on the maximum available memory.

The more memory a card has the more VRAM is reserved. It is not acceptable that customers spend thousands of dollars for new GPU with 12 GB VRAM just to have only around 8 GB useable.

    - - -

Therefore the hope is that the Microsoft Windows 10 team has a very close look why and how exactly VRAM is reserved.
