  1. Window 10 no longer switches brightness when running on battery

    Hello,

    For at least a couple of months now there has no longer been a brightness control slider to individually control the brightness when on battery or when plugged in when you go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings.

    However, until about a week ago I could still adjust the two separately by unplugging the laptop, use the keyboard shortcuts to adjust my brightness to what I wanted for battery and then when I plugged it back in it would switch back to the brightness for being plugged in. Similarly unplugging it, it would automatically switch to the level I had it set to when I was last on battery. I am not sure, but I think this also worked by using the slider in the notification side bar.

    Since the most recent windows update the one that revamped Microsoft edge and I needed to reset my start up pages among other things this no longer works. I will also say that I am not confident about which version of Windows 10 I'm currently on. Settings/System/About it says I'm version 1909. If I go to Settings/Update & Security it says I'm up to date which I understand should be version 2004???

    Things I have tried:

    1. Made sure my nvidia drivers were up to date
    2. Made sure the drivers for the Generic PnP Monitor are up to date. If I automatically search for new drivers it says the current drivers are fine though they are from 2006.
    3. Disable/re-enable Generic PnP monitor
    4. Removed Generic PnP monitor that was hidden under monitors. I went to view and selected show hidden devices to be able to do this. This was suggestedhere.
    5. Followed this tutorial to change the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\7516b95f-f776-4464-8c53-06167f40cc99\aded5e82-b909-4619-9949-f5d71dac0bcb from 1 to 2. I realized the tutorial says that this didn't work since version 1809 but I thought I would try it anyways. It need have the effect of adding an option to advanced power settings/display for adaptive brightness control but was reset as soon as I restarted windows.
    6. Did a registry search for the key EnableBrightnessControl as per an answer postedhere. It was not found.

    Does anyone know if those sliders were supposed to have disappeared and if there is anything that can be done to get them back?

    :)

  2. [Guide] How to auto-adjust brightness when running on battery/charging

    Hey guys,

    Windows 10 removed the option to set one brightness level for running a laptop on AC, and another for running on battery (forcing you to either have one constant battery level, or change it manually - there was no way in the system you could change this).

    A kind user over at the Autohotkey forums helped me find an answer.

    First, head over to AutoHotkey and install the program (32 bit or 64 bit, depending on your Windows 10 install).

    Then, head on over to this thread, check out VSUB's post, and click 'Download' above the script they've posted.

    You can change brightness on charge and brightness on battery by changing the values of the script that are bolded below:

    {
    SendMessage,0x0422,0,50, msctls_trackbar321
    IniWrite,Off,% A_ScriptDir"\Power.ini",Status,Battery
    }
    Else
    {
    SendMessage,0x0422,0,10, msctls_trackbar321
    IniWrite,On,% A_ScriptDir"\Power.ini",Status,Battery
    }

    I've got my AC/charging brightness set at 90% (the first value, 50), and my on-battery value set to 50% (the second value, 10).

    To edit an Autohotkey script (.ahk), right click the script, click 'Open with...', select notepad, edit those values, then save the script as an .ahk again.

    As vsub says, make sure that you're plugged in the first time you run the task. You can add it to your start menu Startup folder or schedule it to start when Windows starts as per other tutorials.

    I know a lot of us were frustrated by this, so for those googling:
