  1. Windows update breaks my computer

I need help to either prevent Windows 10 from updating my computer or a fix to Windows so that the update does not break it.

I have an old HP laptop that works great. Does what I need and really do not see any reason to spend money to get a new one. However, Microsoft keeps forcing me to upgrade the OS on this computer. The laptop is still using Windows 10 1709. If I allow Windows to update to 1803 or 1809 or 1903 or 1909 the computer ceases to work properly.

The first issue after an update is that the computer will not wake from sleep properly. When it comes out of sleep state, the computer does a hard re-boot. This machine is set up to wake every night to do it's backup and because it reboots, the backup never gets completed. I have searched the web high and low for a resolution to this problem but as of yet have not found one that works. Other people have also complained about this problem and while a BIOS update seems to fix some people, it does not fix all. An because my machine is an HP never every buy HP again they have no newer BIOS fixes for me to try.

The second issue, and this happens mostly when upgrading past 1803 i.e. 1809 and above is that when coming out of sleep, the computer hard re-boots, but then the re-boot fails completely the circle of dots stop moving and the only way out is to power off and then power back on.

So I either need an upgrade that won't break my machine and a method to completely prevent Microcrap from every upgrading my machine but keep the Windows Security updates coming.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Greg ...

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Pro and Ergnomic Break Reminder

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply.

Do you remember installing any break reminder software?

It looks like it is a pop up from a break reminder software.

I suggest you to look for this in Programs in features and uninstall it if do not use it.

    Try the following steps:

    • Press Windows + R keys to open Run Command

    • Type Appwiz.cpl and hit enter

    • Search for the programs and un-install it.

    Regards,

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond Windows update breaks my computer :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.
